The direction and cinematography were the highlights here and the film has an expressionistic and Noirish feel to it. The rest of the film is fairly unremarkable. The casting of Moriarty felt off, the inclusion of a kid sidekick for Holmes was odd and didn't work, but on the bright side, the marriage subplot was surprisingly fun.

Fox Film's attempt at the famous detective with Clive Brook as Sherlock and Reginald Owen as Dr.Watson. And there is a different twist to Holmes personal life in this version. He's engaged to be married. To a lady no less! And he has a little Canadian boy he's teaching criminology to for some unexplainable reason. Not to mention the surreal sight of seeing the great detective in drags smoking his pipe! This is very hit and miss. But watch it for the Ernest Torrence performance!
