The topic of the story is ambitious and original but it was far too complex and rather messy, and the resolving of plots at the end by Holmes is needed as there were no clues to the mysteries in the film which denies the 'play along' factor that these kind of films really need. However, a pleasing palette of characters disregarding the annoyingly cheesy villain and the relationship between Holmes and Watson is handled extremely well by the actors and that is what pulls you through this film.

Turns out that a Guy Ritchie take on Sherlock Holmes is better in theory than in practice. Too watered-down and Hollywoodized for a true Ritchie flick, and too dumb and action-y for a true Holmes adaptation. RDJ is an unconventional but serviceable Holmes, but Rachel McAdams is wildly miscast as Irene Adler. I still give the movie a marginal recommendation because, despite its many faults, it does manage to entertain in its own awkward way.

Good, not great. Didn't feel anything like a Guy Ritchie film, which is a bad thing for me. RDJ is pretty awesome yet again. The chemistry with him and Jude Law felt forced and it was hard for me to believe it. Horrible soundtrack and some noticeably bad CGI in places. All the women characters were complete throwaways and they had one of those shitty endings that had to set up for the sequel. I liked it but I don't know if I'll remember much about it in a week or 2.

It's neither Arthur Conan Doyle nor great cinema, but I went to see cool action, Victorian London settings, exaggerated minutia-centric sleuthing, and Robert Downey Jr. being witty, and by god, it had all those things. Irene Adler ended up feeling a little superfluous and the plot is definitely kinda messy, but Holmes and Watson had great chemistry and I plain had fun. Color me on board for the blatantly set up sequel.

This fast paced movie depicting the timeless story of Sherlock Holmes is wonderfully done. It is fun to watch and thought provoking to those in the audience trying to follow all the clues that Holmes finds. The dialouge between Holmes and Watson is hilarious and their relationship is strong even when in disagreement. It is worth seeing this version of the timeless story.

A nice looking and clever mystery film that deeply immerses you into the plot and you come out of it as if you solved the mystery yourself. Jude Law and Downey Jr have some great chemistry, and perform extremely well at that. It seems I should have liked it more. It has a great plot, and when the mystery unravels it is really cool seeing how everything happened. Good Film.

Enjoyable and fun. Obviously it's Sherlock Holmes actioned up for a modern generation. Thankfully there's some genuine humour in it to keep it quite interesting without full-out resorting to explosions and breasts. However it never really fully gels together and the climatic fight scene is absolute garbage. Hopefully the sequel will be better, because they leave it wide open for one.

Ponderous and predictable, Guy Ritchie's take on Doyle's work seems more interested in cashing in on a franchise than telling a story of worth. With a dimensionless villain and a plot so thoroughly mired in superfluous characters, its hard to build any tension. The stakes are never high and the characters in no danger of growth or development. To add insult to the entire mess, the entire last ten minutes are devoted to setting up a sequel, in leiu of an actual ending or fitting climax.

The biggest weakness is not really knowing and therefore caring about what the main Macguffin is. Apart from that, Sherlock Holmes is solid blockbuster entertainment. London looks nicely grimy, Holmes is an interesting change from the sober gentleman you'd expect, action and humor are nicely mixed and the music is surprisingly good.

A movie that lives by it's brilliant main actors, up ahead Downey J.r as master detective "Sherlock Holmes" and his partner "Watson" played by Jude Law. Both did a great Job and make this movie very entertaining. The story isn't very exciting, and it gets more and more abstruse to the end, but Nevermind, because the chemistry between the actors is great.

Boring and overlong, I spent far too much time checking my watch to recommend this to anybody else. Robert Downey Jr. is good in the lead but the talents of both Law and McAdams are utterly wasted in their limited roles. Guy Ritchie's direction is surprisingly bland too, with any flashes of his energy seemingly lifted straight from his other films (a bare-knuckle fight scene in particular evokes strong memories of Snatch). So instantly forgettable you wonder why they bothered.

Not fun at all - quite boring actually and the mystery is badly composed. Why the hell make a Sherlock Holmes film if you don't have an intelligent script? All explanations are so obvious. McAdams is totally wasted while Strong and Law are ok. Downing Jr. is good. (Hugh Laurie would have been amazing)

Strip-malling a classic hero2 please the teens, this Hollywood makeover makes Holmes a little less unique& a lot more GENERIC. The most glaring anachronism is his relationship2 Watson: u know u're watching an unnecessarily false adolescent-boy spin on male friendship when a Victorian-era intellect is unable to express his happiness that his best friend didn't die, cause that's not as cool. Still the film keeps the action well-lubed in order2 race past the many "WTF?" deductions Holmes sniffs out

Jude Law and RDJ do fantastic jobs in their respective roles--I was seriously impressed at how they worked together. Ritchie seems to have completely forgotten his roots, but the slack is picked up by some superb acting and a script that stays true enough to its origin.

Solid enough film, largely because of the chemistry between Downey Jr and Law. I thought they played off each other extremely well. The story itself, while not exactly hokey, seemed to be believable enough in a classic Holmesian way. Ritchie's directing was unobtrusive, though i did find some of the early action scenes to be a bit blurred, and tough to follow with the eye. There are worse things out there to see (When In Rome and Leap Year come to mind).

RDJ and Jude Law work beautifully as a somewhat updated Holmes/Watson team, but the fundamental flaw of this flick is that the central mystery is not very engaging, and when you're dealing with Sherlock, a boring mystery is really the biggest sin. Hopefully the future sequels will improve that aspect.

Horrors! The worst of it, worse than the hero's unseemly number of brushes with death or his embarrassing gullibility to feminine wiles, worse even than the blanketing darkness and the teeth-rattling sound and music imposed by Ritchie, is the insouciance of Downey, Jr. (never mind his bad accent) in the title role. In a rare bow to discretion, he at least lays off the cocaine.

Enjoyable but average. Downey Jr. was born to play Holmes, and Ritchie's otherwise pathetic action upgrade of the iconic detective works surprisingly well. Still some scenes should have been left for extra material, and there's too much "follow me around the room" without giving the audience a chance to guess along. Still, it's a fun ride. Consider it the best McDonalds meal ever: You'll be content as you leave the restaurant, burb once and be hungry for something else...

Sharp characterization and performances, personal chemistry, and something approaching restraint (for Guy Ritchie, at least) make for an enjoyable piece of Victorian steampunk. It doesn't end up quite playing fair -- there's no way the audience could infer the same things as the great detective -- but it doesn't suffer too much for it.

Not ruined by its update for modern audiences, although the plot isn't the best and it gets off to a rough start before it picks up the pace. An unusual film for Guy Ritchie, but a good one at that. It had wits, strong performances (Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law's chemistry was very personal), sharp developmental character progression and burgeon all set on a gracefully cultivated Victorian context. It pays a plentiful amount of devotion and admiration to the source. The ending without a doubt hints at a future sequel.

Too much explaining. RDJ plays his usual self and Jude Law is arguably more interesting, but for the bland wife. I was disappointed with the secret society plot, but Mark Strong can give world domination speeches any day. Nowadays Moriarty would be left to a post-credits scene. Make America English again. London looked like a steampunk dump but was quite sparse in long shots. Fav scenes: any private interaction between the eternally cute Rachel McAdams and RDJ.

Finally, a mainstream Holmes film. Depending on how you read the stories, this is a pretty good rendition of his character, and you can't go wrong casting Jude Law in a film. I just wish that the mystery itself wasn't so silly. The real failing of this film was that too much of the mystery was revealed from the enemies point of view, which takes away the... mystery of it. Still, a great fucking film, and pretty true to the Holmes character, if not the Holmes stories.

A good action/comedy film that, while it makes you forget about everything for those 3 hours, will also get forgotten pretty fast as it's just not anything special. The acting's very decent, and I liked the idea of a not-your-everyday Sherlock Holmes, but the environment seriously lacks detail on some parts and the story could be more firm (although it's an "easy" movie) - plus some characters were really roughly put into the movie for the sake of sequel - namely the Professor.

There's some great acting by Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law in what is basically a 19th century buddy cop movie. However the movie doesn't really reward the perceptive audience and instead offers a series of deus ex machina type explanations at the end which aren't satisfactory. There are a couple nice nods to mixed martial arts and Hong Kong action films too. Without Downey's superior acting this film wouldn't have worked at all. Overall it's a good effort but nothing beyond mild entertainment.

With anyone else as Holmes this movie would have failed to hold my interest. RDJ's ability to balance charisma and charm with the analytic ticks and masterful sleuth skills of the famous detective bring the legend to life, but there is a lack of strong supporting characters. The story doesn't live up to the potential and the villain, though creepy, isn't particularly interesting. Style over substance, but fortunately Guy Ritchie's cinematography, music and slick action still make it a fun romp.

Being enjoyable is something Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" does very well. Its fun, has a great deal of chemistry between the leads and all of its wit is expressed well. A lot needed to be explained but Sherlock is a smart fellow so the audience needed the time to catch up. Some scenes could of done with a polish a long with the CGI but pacing went along without a hiccup. A second mention to the superb Downey Jr. which is more the reason I finished this with a smile on my face.

The crime story is exceptionally dull, the villain exceptionally uninteresting, and the screenwriter must have forgotten that it's not good enough for the detective to just explain it all at the end, the audience kinda needs to be in on at least a few of the clues during the main bulk of the plot for a crime story to work. Luckily, Downey Jr. and Law are stellar, and the chemistry/relationship between them provides a fantastic narrative force regardless.

Guy Ritchie delivers a another solid action flick with an ever-awesome Downey Jr as the lead. Seeing as how I don't know anything about Holmes canon I can't comment on any authenticity (though it's obviously modernized) and as an update it works for me. Extremely fun to watch, Sherlock Holmes sees the birth of what will hopefully be a fruitful franchise. Yes, a sequel would need a bit of work over this film - perhaps a more solid storyline and a bit more mystery (Sherlock Holmes is a detective, after all); but the other basics are all already there - fantastic directing, acting (especially by lead Downy Jr.), great chemistry, a good dose of wit and superb dialogue and not to mention some good action for good measure.

A modern update akin to 'Batman Begins' for our analytical, pipe smoking slueth. Even down to playing up the main Holmes villain at the end for that sequel plug. Downey and Law have created memorable characters that play off of one another in a masterful way, turning Watson into an actual character rather than someone for Holmes to say "elementry" to. I do have to say I am thankful we didn't have to sit through a meet and greet on the characters. I also love Victorian Steampunk.

A highly fashionable and stylistic detective intrigue. Guy Ritchie has directed his best movie to date by capturing the spirit and heart of the beloved tandem and character of both Holmes and Watson. Moreover, Downey Jr. is charming, misanthropic, pompous and above all: ready to duel even the mightiest of foes with uncanny wit and intelligence. However, the fast-pace filmmaking and blend of preposterous storytelling creates a disjointed, incoherent and very chaotic atmosphere that lacks flow.

What could have been a good mystery movie is poorly executed. Lackluster performances, an awkward storyline ripped off from "National Treasure", a liberal use of poor CGI and too many action scenes for a classic mystery character. Made for a fast-food audience, some good elements are wasted on a garbage movie, where my "50" is generous. The good: the tone of London's aesthetics, the costuming, the score, the background work and elements that make up the flotsam and jetsam of the city.

A lot of talent displayed on the screen here, but the story which is very engaging at first, runs out of steam, wit and ideas all at once about half way through. Saving the world/conspiracy plots are hard enough to pull off in a 21st century setting, much less a 19th century one. It has a well played set up for a sequel. Hopefully they'll bring in some writing help to carry it all the way through to the finish. Downey is excellent to superb in any case.

Ritchie's London has a colour pallet drab to the point of being visually boring, and a few key set pieces feel entirely too computer generated. Still it's the cast that make it so good, as Downey Jr. and Law strike a wonderful rapport as Holmes and Watson -- their bickering is a constant stream of entertainment. The boxing matches pack far more excitement than the explosions, and while this might seem like a bit too much action for a Sherlock Holmes movie, I can't complain. It's charming enough.

As a heartfelt Conan Doyle fan, I cannot give this film a high rating. Downey Jr. and Law are charming, but they are not faithful to the vision of the original Holmes and Watson. Also, whatever Irene Adler was, she was not a mere trollop; nor was she controlled by any man, even by Prof. Moriarty, the spider at the centre of the criminal web. The supernatural elements of the story distracted from the characterizations of Holmes and Watson.

Mistakes - 1) In the scene where Watson and Adler are laying out the map, they place two objects on the map to hold it down. In the very next clip where it shows Holmes talking, Watson and Adler place the same objects on the map. 2) When Holmes and Watson are in jail, close-ups of Jude Law reveal a hearing aid in his left ear. 3) When Holmes and Watson get off the boat onto land, they wade through water for a short distance. A good reimaging of the Sherlockian world. It had a lot of subtle touches and easter eggs for an avid reader of the original work to spot. The main problem with the movie are the overly long and sometimes even boring action sequences, clearly intended for a different type of audience. It's sort of a hybrid between a sophmoric action flick and a steampunk based intelligent drama. It worked for me, but I can see why it most likely won't work for some people.

This is a great example of a fun, Holmesian story. Keeps you guessing and, at the end, I was more satisfied with the movie than with Avatar. Downey is fascinating and charismatic, and Law is a great Watson; a deductive wonder who nearly rivals Holmes. The action is ramped up from what you would normally expect from Holmes, but even when fighting, you can see how Holmes is always analyzing and calculating his way to victory. I recommend this movie without qualification.

It had so much potential. It really did. Had Ritchie simply toned down the plot and made it a simple murder mystery, he'd have allowed us to focus mostly on the brilliant cast and excellent dialogue. Instead, we're forced to watch the cast blunder through a slightly ridiculous, badly paced "magical murder mystery". Ugh. Love the steampunk and Robert Downey Jr. I could do without the pre slow-mo scenes though.

Lots of fun and one of the better movies of the holiday season (better than Avatar at least). The plot is rather muddled and depends on several Xanatos Gambits but it's still fun to watch it unravel. Robert Downey Jr is an excellent Holmes and he also kills the English accent. Nice to see an American do it for once! Jude Law is likeable in this movie as well.

Perfectly acceptable, but slightly disappointing take on the Holmes character which Robert Downey Jr. -- not nearly as charming as his take on Tony Stark in "Iron Man" -- struggling to make the character his own. Count me amongst those hoping to see a little more "sleuthing" and a little less generic action and fistacuffs. Sadly, Ritchie succumbs to the whims of the day. If ever there was a vehicle to slow down the ultra-zoom/shaky cam fight scenes that rule today's action flicks, this was it.

This will definitely be the first in a successful series of films. A very entertaining watch which in no small way is helped by the performance of Robert Downey Jr. His eccentric and witty portrayal may become as famous as Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow and Jude Law proves to be his perfect foil. Lots of fun and great dialogue!!

Was hoping for at least an attempt at a mystery movie, but nope. Just an action film, not even a good one.

A solid Hollywood actioner, full of requisite deus-ex-machina, fights every 10 pages or so, and a heroine that is underutilized until she puts on some male knickers. Seriously, though, it's fun (in true Ritchie Style), just not very "Holmes" in the technical sense. The character wit and production design are standouts. RDJr.'s Holmes seems to be a love child of Tony Stark and Jack Sparrow, which works here, but probably for the last time.

Even though I prefer Benadryl Cucumber’s Sherlock, this was very fun, very 2009’ movie. 69 for the homoerotic tension

A fun movie, much because of the great charisma of Robert Downey Jr, which is not exactly a surprise. The film has some flaws there, but really worth seeing.

Its not your typical Sherlock Holmes movie. The first half is full of action and boring nonsense. The last half comes through with typical Sherlock Holmes analysis and detective work. If you are looking for a run of the mill Sherlock Holmes movies, this is not it. From the looks of it, there will be a sequel.

The film sacrifices Conan Doyle's precious characters, but the film is still a fun ride, featuring strong performances from Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law

The triumph of form over substance. Visually, it's great: computer effects are brilliant, costumes are elaborate, London's Tower Bridge being still under construction looks amazing, and one can even say that Robert Downey Jr. is handsome. Unfortunately, the plot itself is not so well developed. Some scenes are happening too fast to really know what's going on; some scenes don't even exist, although they should be (for continuity of the story). Holmes is too much of a smartass to actually exist.
