I'm not sure that I like the Rathbone Holmes being bought by an American company, but it ends up being the most patriotic British film ever. The German propaganda broadcaster montage does a great job setting the mood. The black and white photography with Holmes' fedora is almost noir. Fav scene: just when you think you have the German spies cornered, they slip into a trapdoor and land on their ready escape boat.

Terrible. The mystery sucks, the acting is mostly pretty bad and the film reeks of WW2 propaganda. The only redeemable quality is that it's short enough that you can make it through to the end.

Holmes serves in the War Effort! No one is safe from the German Evil, not even your women! Defeat the hidden Nazi scourge through leaps of logic with facts not provided to the audience! Buy War Bonds!

The worst of the Rathbone/Bruce films. It just doesn't satisfy as a mystery. Holmes' deductions come out of nowhere (even more than usual), which are often explained with reference to a clue that the audience was not privy to. That's just unfair. The few twists are clearly broadcast and there's almost no tension. And the attempt to modernize the Holmes universe is, as always, disappointing. On the bright side, Rathbone's performance is especially good in this installment.

Holmes vs. Nazi's. What's not to love about that? Probably the best cinematography of the entire series too, as Evelyn's eyes literally sparkle in one shot.

A great piece of ant-Nazi propaganda enlisting Holmes in the war effort.

Well it's propaganda, so it's awkward and speechy as propaganda tends to be - the opening title card seems almost apologetic about dragging Holmes into the war - but it also has some utterly gorgeous cinematography and it's often solid when it isn't telling you to join the war effort.

Felt a little weird bringing in Sherlock Holmes to fight the Nazis and not letting him use his trademark detective hat, but I did enjoy how the mystery entangled, regardless of how obvious it was for propaganda reasons.

This part of the opening title card really irks me: "In solving significant problems of the present day he remains - as ever - the supreme master of deductive reasoning." Mr Holmes, both the literary and cinematic figure including as portrayed in this film, is supreme master of 'abductive reasoning' (not deductive reasoning)! But putting that complaint aside - difficult for me as a Peircean - Sherlock Holmes sure can arouse anti-Nazi sentiment among the Brits, and for that I salute this film!

Sherlock Holmes and the Little Pretentious Shit. I was expecting more from a Sherlock film. Well, it is not that I was not expecting it but I was expecting some really complicated puzzle to solve.
