When our "War with the Machines" (tm) has sent mankind back into a dark age where we must hide in abandoned sewers, eating charred rats and sipping urine to survive, terrified that a barking dog may signal the infiltration of a cyborg into our hideout...the elders will tell tales of a noble Prinze who won the heart of a lowly bespectaled castle Cook, and the children will then know that no matter how hard their lives now, nothing was worse than high school in 1999. (Cue "I Want It That Way")

I know. I know this is such a cliche that it's almost a cliche to point it out. But the whole "glasses come off and boy fucking howdy it's a beautiful swan" plot device has always infuriated me. It's fucking lazy and sends a bad message. How about a teen romantic comedy in which the male lead learns to appreciate and respect a woman for something other than her looks? And then she can make him over by forcing him to read books and volunteer at a battered women's shelter or something.

I'm going to pretentiously argue that this movie actually functions as a parody of the 1990s and high-school films in general. It's not without its moments.

She's all that? Well, you don't say! Amazing how, after wearing glasses and a ponytail (eww!) throughout the entire movie, the hideous She-Beast Rachael Leigh Cook morphs into a Perfect 10 just by removing the specs and putting on a dress! But seriously, fuck this movie.

Nothing in this movie makes any sense, how could you not tell that Cook was hot with her hair up? This is part of the reason why I love this movie though. Everyone in this film seems to be slightly mentally challenged, especially Freddie Prinze Jr, who somehow gets into Harvard, Princeton, Yale, pretty much every Ivy League school in existence all the while doing some of the dumbest shit ever committed to film. It's so sad that I've seen this film at least 10 times.

OH MY GOD SHE HAS GLASSES HOW CAN I POSSIBLY MAKE HER HOT! SHE HAS PAINT ON HER OVERALLS AND GLASSES! AND PAINT AND GLASSES! Matthew Lillard's small role is the only positive thing about this film, and even that doesn't bring this film anything close to worth while.

It's that formulaic 'ugly' duckling turns into a swan by removing her glasses, doing her hair, wearing makeup and wearing a dress, but I liked Cook enough that it was at least watchable despite the insulting and bland underlying material.

It tries real hard to be a new Sixteen Candles flavored teen movie. It's the story of My Fair Lady, and it's not all bad, but it's mostly pretty blah. Ugh!

'Pretty Woman" for the teenagers of the late 90s. The thing that always bothered me is that studios never pick ugly girls to use for these kind of stories. They take the girl's hair out of a pony-tail and take off her glasses. Wow.

Freddie Prinze Jr. is perhaps the most generic actor who has been given a stint at leading man status in the last decade. It says a lot that Chris Evans' PARODY of Freddie Prinze Jr. in Not Another Teen Movie was about ten times more charismatic and funny than the real thing. Even outside of him, despite my fondness for the teen genre, the movie has a strangely muted energy level and they kind of forgot to add punchlines to any of the jokes.

I mean, they couldn't even do some heavy makeup tricks to make her look like an average Jane? I honestly can't see how we're supposed to be fooled here. Strangely enough, that was one of the least infuriating aspects of the movie.

True facts: They actually added a fully-choreographed dance sequence to the prom part of this movie because it was TOO SHORT. This film wraps up so quickly and is so inane and problematic, it's hard to know where to start. Usher was in a lot of teen movies in the late '90s, huh?

Pygmalion for the 90s set - which sounds about as terrible as "Clueless" does but -never- reaches the heights of that film. It throws realism out the window for a near fairytale approach to high school, and it certainly doesn't suffer from it - the set design is stylish, and there's some good work here, Matthew Lillard kinda rules as a scenery-chewing asshole (in-character. He's chewing the scenery anyway) and overall it's not offensive. Several of the gags here are funnier than the parodies.

This is definitely a film that, to get the best out of it, you have to just leave your brain in your coat pocket and let it wash over you. The problem is, it doesn't stand up to any kind of scrutiny at all. It's painfully predictable, laughably formulaic and, worse than that, it doesn't even know what it wants to be. One moment, it's fairly amusing, the next, it tries to be like a teen drama, and the next, it tries to be funny again, but doesn't quite pull it off. It's a shame.

Some stuff really clicks -- like the REAL WORLD TV show, some tracking shots. But the film ends up falling too easily for toxic masculinity cliches and has not aged that well. Less funny than I would expect. Dancing at the homecoming is fun, as well as Lillard dancing like crazy at a party. But that's it.

Cook is attractive and the "dorky" persona is a tough sell. FPJ asks her to the beach. She's like, "no". But then she's like, "yes". Then he asks her to a party. She's like, "no". But then she's like, "yes". Also, of course a friend of hers would rush to tell an estranged boyfriend about a new boyfriends plans to have sex in a hotel instead of telling her directly... My canon is that it's a high school full of soulless monsters and Sarah Michelle Gellar is there to kill them all (not pictured).

This movie is probably know for the one line at the end of the movie that appeared in all of the trailers. There are a lot of well known actors in this film but they couldn't save a bad script. The plot is formulaic and it doesn't add anything to any of the other hundreds of movies that follow the same plot line. For me, it's a blast from the past and it get's a boost in score just because it's linked to my adolescence but objectively isn't not a good movie.

Poster-child for the absurd 90s teen rom-com straddles the line of treating the material with good natured contempt and a sincere buy-in – if it never quite tips in the right direction, it is still a likable and enjoyable example of the genre, with some funny set-pieces and offbeat performances (5 extra points for the insane, fully choreographed dance-flash mob sequence!). Cook and Prinze are a fine romantic couple, with the film almost stolen by an underused Pollak as Cook’s muttering father.
