Shin Ultraman

Fun movie. Not for everyone but most Ultra fans will enjoy it.

As an update, reboot, and reimagining of the original story while still honoring the look and feel of the source material this was awesome. However, the main story feels episodic and moves into bland territory while settling for an underwhelming end.

Striking visuals and a welcoming Hawksian aspect to the second half -- humans of an elite team forge an idea to bring science to the front and help Ultraman defeat the deadly space station -- make this a truly exciting watch. Also, gotta love the character slapping her (and Ultraman's ass) before a catch phrase.

Starts off great but I left begging it for more. Kaiju projects are simple at heart - small monsters made big, kicking each other around - but this mostly abandons that childlike thrill around the halfway mark for realpolitik and philosophical inquiries about the nature of God, squeezed from a TV season into 2 hours. The VFX makes low art high in rather magnificent fashion. (Attack of the 50 ft woman - a highlight.) I just wish its ending didn’t have an Ang Lee’s Hulk aftertaste.

Although the film is pretty talky at times, it is dynamic and has some of the most interesting visuals I've seen this year ... from the screwheaded Gabora to the alien Zarab, who kind of only has a front to the floating Zetton that threatens to annihilate all life on Earth. The creations are all CGI, but they are designed to look like suits, making it feel like the original show. REALLY ... GOOD ... STUFF ...
