Drama

A hundred and fourteen famous Iranian theater and cinema actresses and a French star: mute spectators at a theatrical representation of Khosrow and Shirin, a Persian poem from the twelfth century, put on stage by Kiarostami. The development of the text -- long a favorite in Persia and the Middle East -- remains invisible to the viewer of the film, the whole story is told by the faces of the women watching the show. I love Kiarostami for staying experimental, even at the peak of his glory as Iran's most celebrated filmmaker. His purpose in this work of concept art is clear: By making his entire film a montage of audience members' reaction shots, he wants to tell THEIR stories. You overhear the voices of supposed stage actors, but the real drama occurs in front of the camera, on the women's silently expressive faces. The experiment has its limits, though, and the poem-play is weak by modern standards.

Once again demonstrates his extraordinary ability to lay humanity bare. Incredibly moving.

although artistically bold, it is exactly as boring as one might think.

Unique. I've never seen anything like this before. One of the best experimental movies i've seen. Imagine this: Kiarostami is filming you watching bunch of women watching a movie that doesn't even exist; Kind of creepy and interesting!

An interesting experiment: can we make where the content is the facial reactions from various audience members watching a film. (In this case, it felt more like they were listening to a story/epic poem.) On this one viewing, the film didn't work so much for me.
