An inspired labor of love for zine-making teens Sandi Tan, Jasmine Ng and Sophie Siddique, Shirkers was a Singapore-made 1992 cult classic—or it would have been, had the 16mm footage not been stolen by their enigmatic American collaborator Georges Cardona, who disappeared. More than two decades later, Tan, now a novelist in L.A., returns to the country of her youth and to the memories of a man who both enabled and thwarted her dreams.

All at once a ghost story, a charming look at long-lasting friendships and the zeal of youth, an infuriating portrait of a shitty dude using his charisma to ruin dreams, and finally an inspiring act of reclamation and refusal to be crushed by defeat. Oh and a 10/10 cat movie also

Not as engaging or bright as it thinks it is, but it kinds of works as a therapy session of a filmmaker dealing with lost dreams, old friendships and the trauma of having your indie DIY road movie stolen by an arrogant vampire who you used to trust as your artistic mentor. Cute, often bleak and as a confessional piece, but I just don't think the whole mystery aura really leads to anything really interesting or fruitful.

I feel almost guilty admitting that I hated this film because it is a unique heart breaking story, but the film bored me just as much as Shirkers, the original production, probably would have. At least the documentary was a serious endevour. The original Shirkers sounds like total nonsense to me. Just a bunch of kids intoxicated with their own self importance and delusions of creative genius.
