A. B. Yehoshua's excellent short story receives a suitably excellent movie adaptation by Uri Zohar, beautifully directed, shot and edited. Best of all is Oded Kotler's absolutely fantastic performance as Eli, a transparent but unfailingly engaging character. As an aside, Kotler doesn't just bear a striking resemblence to young Dustin Hoffman in looks and mannerisms, but the character of Eli is a rigid young mathematician with dark-framed glasses just like Hoffman's David Sumner in Straw Dogs.

This thoroughly enjoyable film by Uri Zohar has caught me completely by surprise. Inspired by the French new wave movement, the films follows the protagonist, Eli, over the course of three days as he watches over the child of an old flame. A dark, stylized and well-made film of a quality that is unfortunately rare in Israeli cinema.
