a badly dubbed kid obsessed with a basement - oh god noooooooooooo not again Some great visuals and a stupid story, the bread and butter of Italian horror.

This started off okay, but it was a wee bit dull, and that kid was starting to get on my wick. I thought the film really got its shit together towards the end, though. There is some great camerawork as you might expect from Bava, and some scenes are well handled, giving rise to a feeling of dread and a couple of scares. The soundtrack is reasonably interesting. It isn't great, and a bit bleak, but Bava's craft elevates it slightly above the glut of 70s Exorcist-inspired schlock.

There are techniques at hand here that would put to shame the documentary style that is used today. When her son runs up and out of frame and up leaps a grown man, she would see that coming, but the angle doesn't allow the viewer to, and that's what matters. Overall it is an unsettling film and deserves credit for it.

Bava does an excellent job of keeping the viewer on his toes. He manipulates our reactions with overpowering intensity. A masterclass piece. Oh, and did I mentioned the baddass soundtrack?!

Wonderful cinematography, but that's all. This is my least favorite Bava movie, what a piece of crap!

The film has its moments but the acting is really bad and the scored just didn't do it for me. I won't talk about the dubbing since I watched it with a terrible English dub that really hurt the film. There were a few good moments and some interesting visuals but ultimately this was a disappointment.

Shock regrettably found Bava trying to align himself with the trends of the time. While there are some nifty opticals, the overpowering Goblin score and the hysterical performances strongly echo the work of other, less skillful directors whose notoriety surpassed his own in the 70's. He managed at least a handful of genuinely tense moments, and Nicolodi is better than she is in Argento's films, but it's too slow and silly to take seriously, and the style pales compared to his baroque horrors.

I'd watch anything starring Daria Nicolodi, and this actually had a surprisingly decent plot for 70s italian horror, and a few standout shots, but overall the motif of "inanimate objects moving around ominously" is quite hokey and the film loses a lot of tension by wasting time with this. It's worth it for die-hard Nicolodi fans like myself, probably skippable for anyone else.

Average, average, average, this is pretty boring and only a little spoo-- HOLY FUCK, DID THAT KID JUST TURN INTO A GROWN ASS MAN? THAT WAS NOT A SPECIAL EFFECT! WHAT THE FUCK? Average, average, end.

A bit slow yet there are some good scares and the finale is utterly nuts.

Everything in this just 'clicked' for me. This goes from being gripping to incredible in its unconventional and nerve racking take on the possessed child story. I love it when a film unexpectedly causes my jaw to drop on the floor when I expected it to be a merely good film from Bava.

One more of those "Demon/Possessed/Evil Children" films of the '70's, but this one differentiates itself by adding a (welcome) Oedipal undercurrent that makes the proceedings as seedy as they should be. Unfortunately the explanation of everything is ridiculous and no one acts very logically, but there's some good scares in places.

It starts off like most promising 70's Italian cheesefests, and it's admittedly a lot more accessible than its so-called "predecessor" , but overall this is still a pretty convoluted & nonsensical mess that's only likely to please hardcore fans of this specific flavor of horror. The plot is all over the place & the twists are ridiculous. That said, the performances aren't terrible & the effects are solid, too. What bogs it down the most is the ungodly slow third act. Overall, it passes the time.
