Take any World War movie and switch it around making the German's the center of heroics and human warmth. That's Stoßtrupp 1917 [Shock Troop]! And it's a strong realistic movie of the European variety where there's not much of that Hollywood gloss. Instead we are down in the gruelling dirt as the bombs keep exploding nonstop. There is an overdose of battles with almost no rest between bangs. They could have used more time building characters, but I guess the real 'stars' were 'Germans at war'.
