Starts off great but De Sica can't resist toying with the audience's emotions and by the end it becomes a really hamfisted film. It's a shame because the same message and emotional impact could have been delivered honestly with a little more care and trust in the audience.

Impressive acting, especially considering they're all amateurs. However, the falling out between the two main characters seemed exaggerated, and I found the end to be unrealistic and emotionally manipulative.

De Sica tells a great story, while getting the most out of his untrained young actors. I was very engaged.

Another fine accomplishment by the Italian Neorealists. Sometimes less is more

Some great scenes, but it doesn't have the same emotional impact as Bicycle Thieves.

Though it leans towards melodrama in the end, the overall film was pretty effective. The amateur actors really make the best of this 'Oliver Twist meets the Shawshank Redemption'.

This is a mostly great film. The plot flows very smoothly and naturally, there's some interesting scenarios and careful use of light humor, and the photography is fantastic. The two leads are generally good, but occasionally go over the top. The main issue is the overly melodramatic ending. It didn't bother me that much, but it wasn't necessary and could have been something much more resonant. The music was also a little much at times. But in general, I thought this was one of De Sica's finest.

A sensitive and powerful drama. It's held up as one of the first neo-realist films, and it is an honest portrayal of children living in poverty in postwar Italy. The story itself slides into melodrama quite often, and it sometimes feel manipulative, but the performances are quite good (rare maturity for child actors) and the story hits hard.

Definitely a tear-jerker and an important part of children's cinema.

I'm probably sort of underrating this one slightly, it was actually fairly entertaining once the kids get sent to the detention center, albeit it slightly more conventional and plot-driven than De Sica's latter neorealist films. The ending was pretty heavy-handed though, and i think i'm just burned out on Italian neorealism (not that i ever took to it much to begin with).

Impressive neo-realist movie from Italy which has two young teens get caught up in a criminal act, ultimately ending with a term in jail. Alliances are made and broken, leading to a tragic end. There aren't many heroes in this film; it's questionable whether our juvenile justice system is all that much more advanced today.

Gripping story of drifting Rome kids and how the system handles them. Powerful as to the fear they face when put behind bars, and how it manipulates and changes them, ultimately leading to disaster. Director Vittorio De Sica had already experimented with kids stories in I bambini ci guardano [The Children are Watching Us] to great success, but here elevates it to another level. He had really matured as a director during the war and here we see the fruits shaped during of those troubled years.

DVDRip no MakingOff.

Salvador Dali once said "Le surrealisme, c'est moi!" which means "The surrealism, it is me!". Well, De Sica had at least the same amount of impact on the Italian New Realism without a doubt.

Beautifully shot, engaging piece of Italian neorealism-the end was a bit too abrupt and dramatic, something more subtle would have made it even more poignant.
