An Indian friend showed me this saying it was the best classic Bollywood film. All I can really remember was a woman who would not. shut. up.

I managed to see only half of it and fastforwarded the rest. It was a real torture - most of the characters were annoying and cliche, jokes unfunny, generally it was unskilled copy of western cinema with some Indian touches (songs etc.)

It's a lengthy work but it stays fresh by keeping versatile. I'm especially impressed with how seamlessly it hops from comedic romance to emotional drama to tense action and then swings all the way back again. That seems like something that would be jarring but it's just not. One fantastic way for a film to endear itself to me is to pay homage to Once Upon a Time in the West with the death of Thakur's family; damn, that scene had some punch. Best of all, there wasn't a bad so

I like Amitabh Bachchan and I love the costume designs, but the movie just has no thought put into pacing or editing at all and virtually no sense of escalation until the end. Three hours really pushes it as running times go, so none of this helps matters.

The archetypical example of a "Masala Film", this Campy Bollywood Neo-Western Disco Musical Martial Arts Bromance has so much going on, that three days after watching, I'm still not sure what to make of it. The film is trying to say and do so much all at the same time, that it feels unfocused and disorganized, but I also can't help but be swept away the sheer scale and ambition of what's trying to be accomplished. Also, Gabbar Singh is one of the most lovably despicable villains in film history.

Some really funny moments, engaging (but OTT cheesy) drama, some very nice kinetic action scenes and just fantastic musical segments. Kinda overblown & all over the place but so vibrant and exciting I can't help but love it.

Vibrant, colourful storytelling and great cinematography. Sholay flips between comedy and tragedy with little warning and is somewhat unsophisticated. But still highly enjoyable - pure entertainment.

I loved the friendship between Jai and Veeru. It's a shame that friendships like that aren't shown in movies anymore. In the beginning, it took a while for me to get into it, but I'm glad that I stuck with it. Sholay is very entertaining and is hilarious at times. Every actor and actress played their role perfectly. Sholay has everything that I look for in a movie but it is sometimes too violent. At times, it is also quite sexist towards women.

Way too long and the mixing of genres doesn't really do it for me. That said, it's a compelling enough, if cliched, story, the two leads and the villain are fun to watch, and most of the individual parts work pretty well.

Epic Bollywood story that makes good use of the influences it takes from Hollywood and Japan. I don't usually like the Bollywood mannerisms, but they don't ruin this movie.

While the film owes heavily to westerns for its style and structure, what truly makes the film is incredible dialogues. The movie is a blast and one of the most quotable there has ever been. The song and dance sequences are a testament to how incredibly entertaining they can be if done right. It's a pure Bollywood riot.

The typical structure of a Bollywood film - three hours or so long, numerous genres - has the potential to create inspired works, but here it undermines this film badly. The last hour or less of Sholay is some of the best of Bollywood cinema I have seen so far, including the famous music sequence involving broken glass, but the middle chapter is dull to sit through. Also in using the Western genre as its template, it sadly seems to take away from the fascinating cultural aspects of the film.

I saw the 204-min cut, which twists and turns as a good Bollywood film should. (Admittedly, for all the brevity of the visual style, the narrative has ziltch.) Genre swings just as wildly, and while some characters are interesting, some that the film dwells on (I'm looking at you, Basanti) are annoying as hell and one-note. For a film of this length, I was hoping for a little more depth.

not terribly bad, but unbearably long: not worth your time

One of the biggest all time hits of bollywood and is a classic. The subtext of the movie being friendship. It is the bollywoods answer to western cowboy classics. The movie is technically sound for its time, it has some really good cinematography. There are flaws in this movie, but I will not dwell upon it. Overall this is a must see a for every bollywood fan.

My first Bollywood film, and one of the biggest hits in Indian history. The story, extremely similar to that of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (and SEVEN SAMURAI), is relentlessly, frustratingly predictable--but it does have a fundamental power. Ramesh Sippy's direction is decent, but where the film excels is in its most unique aspect: its music. R.D. Burman's songs are delightful ("Yeh Dosti" particularly), and the musical numbers are beautifully staged. Generally solid acting, especially Sanjeev Kumar.

A bit of a mixed bag here. What's good (the action, the set-pieces, the very western-like story) is very good, but like some other Bollywood stuff it tries a bit too hard to be everything with all people, and most of the broad comedy doesn't work all that well, the romance is kind of trite, and I'm usually not very into the big song and dance numbers. It's certainly a big production, though, and relatively enjoyable, and if it had been trimmed some it could have been even better.

This epic movie in Bollywood history was inspired from multiple Hollywood ones which includes 1. Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) 2. The Seven Samurai (1954) 3. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966) 4. The Magnificent Seven (1960) The movie was a path-breaking one of India and for the complete crew. Amazing storyline, acting and start cast carried this movie to become the top movie of Bollywood.
