A remarkable, sumptuous piece of work. Uniformly gorgeous, many set pieces and lines of dialogue are so stocked with wit they become not just double- but triple-entendres upon reflection, perfect for a movie-about-movies setting. This layering device - operating on so many profound levels of interpretation, with humor and sadness in equal doses - leads to one of the best film endings ever put to screen: We worship at the altar of cinema. Some do in faith, and others, in penance.

Innovative in style and storytelling. The restoration with especially its soundtrack is very good.

Another wonderful restoration of Anthony Asquith's early silent work. While not up to the same standard of the wonderful Underground (1928), Shooting Stars (1928) is another superb piece of film making from the director! Brian Aherne is a dashing silent star here, almost mirroring the likes of Gary Cooper in his cowboy costume. Simple problems effectively done, with a karma ending so emotionally brilliant, you can't help but appreciate Asquith's wit!
