A wonderfully small-scale and true-to-life drama about the joys of chosen family, with a moving undercurrent dealing with the Japanese recession and living in poverty. The performances are phenomenal, even from the kids, while Koreeda is excellent at that slow, intimate Ozu style. Best Palme winner in years.

Koreeda is a lovely filmmaker, capable of making movies that have a humanity to them that few others can even come close to. This movie is perfectly written and acted. It never outright exalts or condems any of its characters, forcing you do the hard work of making up your own mind without ever feeling overly scripted. Only reason it doesn't get a 10 out 10 is that it did not move me as much as I had hoped, which I honestly think is more a fault of the viewer than the viewed.

My favorite of Koreeda's films so far, I think (probably even better than 'Nobody Knows'). In this well-deserved Palme d'Or winner, from which humanism practically oozes out of every pore, plot and character are, essentially, one and the same, and I liked those gradual reveals a lot. Definitely a good deal more than the themes of the film. Best of all, though, is the uniformly excellent ensemble cast.

Perfect casting and chemistry between actors. I love the little scenes, so microscopic but larger than life. Hushed but full of emotion. The scene with the fireworks is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. It deserved the tears I couldn't give it. Some minor qualms - the "interrogation" scenes with the parents felt disjointed from the rhythm and emotion of the rest of the film, at least to me. The final few scenes, however, are exquisitely heartwrenching. Great filmmaking.

An incredibly emotional masterpiece that will stick with me for a long time. Heartbreaking, beautiful, uplifting, and devastating in turn and all at once; a staggeringly moving picture. Sakura Ando gives a particularly powerful performance, but there is not a weak link in the cast. Truly a magnificent film on every level.

Quite moving drama about a family attempting to survive on the fringes of society. This has been compared to Ozu but I saw a lot more Imamura in it. Particularly in how it embraces physicality (as something both profane & transcendental) & examines ambiguous morality & various limits & functions of social structures. Good performances make the narrative feel natural but it could use more focus or bite. Some wonderful stylistic touches sprinkled here & there make it an uneven delight.

How much of what we think of a person - down to their basic goodness - is inherit in our first impression of them? Or, put another way: how many wrongs would it take for you to overlook someone's rights? Moves along as gently as a breeze, so that when small threats to our characters' precarious existences appear, it feels shockingly intense. The child actors here are truly revelatory.

Its subtle beauty grows with time-wonderful camerawork, production design, and acting bring forth excellent scenes of a unique family simply living a simple life, finding comfort amidst hardship. The third act brings with it notes of drama that only serve to heighten the heart of the previous two in retrospect, as cold scenes of law and tradition break up the warmth that came before it and earnest Osamu attempts to pick up the pieces (see the nuanced developments in his relationship with Shota).

The second time thru this I picked up on a lot more of the subtle touches Koreeda has going on.There's something about the beach scene when the father is teaching his "son" about women and puberty that is very touching to me on cuz it reminded me of my own fucked up realtionship with my father and his attempts to help me when he could(much like ALL of After the Storm).I haven't shoplifted since I got a steady job and this flick made me miss it. Kore-eda and this wonderfully nuanced cast create a warm, insulated atmosphere that really just hits the nail on the head on what it means to bond as a family. There is an air of danger throughout the film which continually brings the family to their safe haven. A great, melancholic tale of life's fleeting moments and an appreciation of whatever works.

Subtly humorous and heartbreaking tale of outcasts who form a family made with genuine compassion and warmth. Ando manages the feat of standing out in an already exceptional ensemble cast. Also, if that scene with the bus doesn't get you, you might be some sort of robot douchebag.

Without seeing Koreeda's previous work, there's a certain coziness to this style that really invites you in. The type of film that I yearn for, as it wraps you around in its warmth and slowly delaminates, revealing its true colours. Performances that are subtle, yet blew me away. A beautiful and complete film imo.

Like the dramas of Edward Yang, every possible ounce of poetry and emotion is drawn out of a captivating array of characters. Sakura Ando has the standout performance as a makeshift mother compelled to make some sense of the family's bizarre circumstances.

The intricately designed intimate setting of the small house says it all, I think. The warmth and power of human connection in the face of a cold, merciless society. Not unlike what Kunihiko Ikuhara portrays in his modern works (the very familiar and lived-in home setting and the bonds of an unconventional family in particular). RIP Kirin Kiki, yet another beautiful performance here

This is Kore-eda at his finest. His ability to draw great performances from his cast, particularly his child actors, is something to behold and is key to making this human drama work. Certainly one of his better films, his deliberate and lingering direction emphases the bond that is shared by "family" no matter the circumstances they are in or how they came about it. You know it's a great film when you just want it to keep going as it meets its inevitable end.

Heard a lot about this when it first came out, but didn't have a way to watch it at the time. Now in 2021 I see a lot of similarities with Parasite with the themes of a poor family living on the fringes of society. The final parts with child welfare's decisions didn't seem to make sense to me (why would Shota be allowed to see his kidnappers?). Everything was so mellow, though, that I didn't really feel any shock from the ending. Fav scene: they put in a beach episode in the movie.

Slowly paced, meandering 'family' drama may benefit (and be elevated) by a rewatch, but at first glance this feels much ado about much ado - the socio-economic points are valid and interesting, and individual scenes are heartbreaking, especially in retrospect (Granny at the beach the most notable), but it feels like too much time is spent on the first two acts before it finally gets to its point. It seems it's a film more about mood than plot (which I didn't get) - again, one to return to.

Koreeda is a patient director, amply taking his time to lay the groundwork for what's essentially a low-key exploration into the notion of 'family' and how the term goes beyond blood ties and familial kinship. Much like LFLS, it didn't exactly rock me to the core, but it contains enough tender and honest moments to warrant a mild recommendation.

Seems to be about the chasm between how the "system" (in the broadest sense, not just the legal or governmental system) understands people's lives and their actual existence, and about how the effect of this chasm is to produce profound loneliness and desperation, which is what in turn the system cannot comprehend or take into account. Not Koreeda's subtlest film, and far from his best, but still has something to say and contains some fine moments.

Koreeda's best since Still Walking has him doing again what he does best; making sweet subtle humane dramas featuring endearing kids. The label of modern day Ozu, although he hates the comparison himself, seems apt. That the movies, especially after a late twist, keeps the motivations of the characters ambiguous lifts it up from being just a simple poor but goodhearted people fable.

A small "family" trying to live life as best as possible. With quiet observations and charming anecdotes, Kore-eda asks the question what makes a family a family. Is it blood? Or might it just be a place to stay with people who love and take care of you, even though they might not be the people you always want them to be?

Kore-eda, who in his gentle sentimentality likes to compare himself more to Naruse than Ozu, is still as reliable as the latter: luminous compositions, intimate observation, a quietly shattering ending. This family unit of grifters spends their days working low-paid jobs, stealing, gambling. Their untidy home is a haven, and by all rights shouldn't exist in this harmony for long. It takes two hours to get to that sad truth because Kore-eda likes the moments of bonding to have a lasting impact.

I heard a lot of buzz about this film around Oscar season, and after learning that it's from the director of Nobody Knows (2004), I film I really loved, I knew I had to check it out. It's quite similar to that film, too. I liked it. It's very understated and slow, but that all allows you to really live with these characters and experience their lives. I wouldn't say I got completely enraptured in it, but it was beautifully made and very human.

I'm going to give this movie all the credit in the world for being really well made. Very emotionally resonant, with some moments of outstanding cinematography. All of the actors give good performances. However, on a purely preferential level I have a harder time getting into more meandering less plot oriented movies like this, so it will probably never be something I love. But if you're at all interested in this movie check it out. I can't stress enough how absurdly high the quality is.

The most humane film I've seen in a while! All the actors are absolutely perfect in their roles, and with the sole exception of the way that Kore-eda ties up (or reveals) loose ends, directing was exquisite. Every scene is beautiful, quite a handful of them heart-wrenchingly so.

A movie with such beautiful images and uplifting moments, yet with the undercurrent of profound sadness and the fear of loss constantly haunting you in the background. What makes a family, really? What is acceptable for survival or for taking care of others? Can lies be necessary or are we always better off with the truth? A lot of questions were raised by this movie. Can't get over how gorgeous it looked and the acting was just so great from both adults and children all around.

Crooks with heart. A wonderfully told tale that is in essence (and society's eyes) rather dark and cruel, but also very real (but also very fictional mind you). The synergies between (great) actors can be felt at all times and the movie unfolds itself in such elegant matter that's a joy to see it happen with your own eyes. I call this one a masterpiece because there is satisfaction on so many levels and that afterglow of lightness after the film is finished with you.

It's like all the softness of his later films has gone off and its all hard edges. Some of the best performances in any of his films, and the small moments all combine to work perfectly - the fragmented ending is especially good. Nobody gets away with anything for the amount of time they need. The boy is particularly devastating - the bridge scene is some of his most heartbreaking stuff. The not so great parts of the movie are all smoothed over by the small moments of beauty.

Challenging preconceptions of social responsibility, of traditional familial bonds, of right and wrong. This family's striving subverts moral codes, perhaps even tests the viewer's sympathy with a few late revelations, but a society's lack of cognizance for this unconventional existence is the true grievance. Kore-eda continues to make such overwhelmingly beautiful, deeply felt pictures with humble gestures. The frequent Ozu comparisons aren't unearned, but I also see glimpses of Ray and Renoir.

Koreeda loves thought experiments, and in this one he concocts his most complicated and most unlikely to diagram the most difficult question to get at: Does family have anything to do with blood relation? In doing so, he both answers a resounding, "No" and reaffirms why the social order must continue to pretend that the answer is, "Yes" in a fascinatingly nuanced fashion. Koreeda's feel for nuance here is incredible as always, but the oddity of the family makes me prefer other works for rewatch.
