Shopworn

Worth seeing--like almost anything is --for Barbara Stanwyck. I kept thinking that a lot of things went unexplained, and that perhaps I was missing some coded symbolism of the time. Then I finally read that some things were cut before the initial release to satisfy the Hays office (even though this is officially pre-code), and that even more was cut before a 1938 re-release, and that's the print that is around today. Mystery solved. And it explains the short run-time of 1 hr 5 minutes.

A middle of the road romance story. Barbara Stanwyck is lovely in her role as the waitress brought into shame by a over-protective society mother of her lover Regis Toomey. Clara Blandick as the old battle ax and her good friend the judge (Oscar Apfel) gives the movie it's evil side. Easy to feel for poor Stanwyck. The movie lacks something to really be more then it is. Shopworn is still a good piece of work and if you love Stanwyck you'll love this.
