Apparently, what I've always thought was a handlebar mustache is actually called a horseshoe mustache. You learn something new every day. Oh, and the movie's fine.

There is barely anything fresh about the film and apart from a solid performance from Coster-Waldau's, there are not many positives to be taken from the film. It just simply leaves you cold in the end. While it is watchable, it's not memorable at all and there are plenty of better prison flicks out there.

Excellent performances of a slice of gang prison life. One man's comfortable life is destroyed in an instant, then going to prison is darkly transformative. Despite the careful journey into a violent world, I didn't feel invested. Heavy on theatrical thrills. Too much bouncing between timelines. I am somewhat perplexed by the murder of the snitch, which seems now like a logic hole. Violent, brutal and sometimes enthralling. A quality production with good music Overall worth watching but brutal.

I specifically tried to choose the worst looking movie on Netflix and chose this. Not as bad as the name might suggest. The Kingslayer plays the lead really well.

Jeffrey Donovan will always have a place in my heart from burn notice. Worth seeing, I didn't love it, but thought it was good.

Underrated. Waldau does really well here as the main character, someone forced into a life he didn't want to be in. Bernthal once again puts in good work as a supporting character. While true that the plot is a little derivative, it was done in an interesting and emotionally charged way. I don't see how people see this as "empty" when he is constantly struggling between being a gangster and wanting to be normal again. Also, that last shot of him by himself in a cage is great; true solitude.

Shot Caller tells the story of ordinary guy Jacob's transformation into ruthless criminal Money. I have a soft spot for this particular type of prison drama and so enjoyed this thoroughly. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is impressive.

Completely watchable, but reeks of a modest budget independent drama attempting to contrive poignancy out of things we've seen a dozen times before. I'm pretty fond of Donovan and Bernthal, but pretty much everyone except Coster-Waldau was fairly skin deep in this one.

This is what happens when a smart strong man goes to a scary American jail and starts outsmarting all the powerful bad(and good)guys. Well done by the Game of Thrones star and holy crap what a ride! Really loved the ending too (even though he doesn't get to reunite with his family).. A true Shot Caller ;)

boring. didn't actually watch it till the end, was actually bored out of my skull. I feel it's like going exactly along the cliches of old prison movies that I don't even remember the names of. I never raised an eyebrow. maybe it's unfair to rate without watching till the end, but ok, I wrote this.

Quite a decent action movie that seems to suffer from too many ideas that don't get enough attention during the film. The same applies to the characters. The script during the first minutes of the movie wasn't that believable. Gets better after that. Probably the most resilient main character I have witnessed in a film.

Brutal and mean crime movie. Basis is exciting but at the end the whole house of cards starting to collapse, and it can't maintain the viewers interest. Lenght of the movie doesn't feel very justified.

The main character in Ric Roman Waugh's movies seems to be the same guy every time; a supposedly decent guy convicted for an unfortunate, momentary lapse of judgment, hardened by prison life, blackmailed into becoming a scumbag while really just thinking of his wife and kid the whole time -- and his sort-of righteous escapades. Or some variation on that theme. That Romantic dreck detracts substantially from Waugh's pretense of authenticity and grittiness.

Even though the movie showed tons of emotions, a narrative of the transformation and some general prison advice, it still felt somewhat... empty. Even the core of the movie (the transformation) was blurred, maybe due to the constant past-present scenes. Overall, I would recommend this movie only if you need something to fix the lack of Game of Thrones, as here Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is playing the Game of Prison.

Coster-Waldau is as effective as an actor can be in a lead role especially when the film has a plot line that has been explored before. Jon Bernthal is the stand out from the supporting cast which was definitely what was expected from this film. It was engaging from start to finish. One of the hidden gems so far of 2017. Recommended if you enjoy films of this nature or if you want to fill your Game of Thrones void with familar actors from the show.

Gritty, depressing, electric. A Waugh specialty. I tend to gravitate to the stories he both writes and directs. It took me too long to finally watch this one. Solid stuff. 7.5

Cliches are useful for quickly establishing things and efficient storytelling. But with a movie like this I'd either espect a faster pace, more suspense or more substance, complexity and...I don't know...ideas. This way it's just another generic crime film. Which becomes frustratingly, then tiringly boring and full of it. Too many actors trying to act cool instead of acting.
