A bored and domesticated Shrek pacts with deal-maker Rumpelstiltskin to get back to feeling like a real ogre again, but when he's duped and sent to a twisted version of Far Far Away -- where Rumpelstiltskin is king, ogres are hunted, and he and Fiona have never met -- he sets out to restore his world and reclaim his true love. Pointless, uninteresting and boring. Can't say I even smiled and further proof 'Shrek' has go even worse. Cash cow series has become pretty much unwatchable tripe.

Shrek Forever After is a film that simply didn't need to be made. While the previous Shrek films had at least some charm, even the arguably unnecessary third film, this one just feels like a play-by-numbers Shrek film. Nothing clever is added to the canon and jokes simply feel rehashed or not clever at all. This can easily be skipped unless you're a massive Shrek fan, which you really shouldn't be by now.

Possibly a mild improvement on the tortuous third movie. The only positive I can pull from DreamWorks fourth & final attempt at flogging this dead horse is that personally I thought Rumpelstiltskin made a good villain. Aside from that this is the usual collection of bad writing, inane pop-culture references & lazy stereotypes. Finally it has to be said that Shrek himself is simply one of the most poorly voiced, annoying & bland animated characters ever created. His popularity mystifies me.

As a large upgrade from 'Shrek the Third,' I really enjoyed watching a sequel full of heart. While it's never as funny or as charming as the first two Shrek movies, this is a satisfying conclusion to a franchise that was starting to wear thin back in 2007.

I hope this really ends the series of green abominations. The only part which is constantly good is the score by Gregson-Williams. Beware - ugly Dreamworks facial animation at its worst.

Not as good as Shrek or Shrek 2, but capable nonetheless. It's a movie that makes you feel like you've come home to spend some time with some old friends. Besides the addition of Rumpelstiltskin, there's another "new character". . , and he's a good one! Most notable is its usage of 3D. It's not overwhelming, and doesn't distort the movie. There's one scene in particular that is the most impressive 3-D effect that I have seen to date. (the one with the white horses and carriage).

It does a good job of remembering the Shrek "saga" while putting a new spin on the whole story. The plot kept me guessing the whole time, and actually further deconstructs the fairy tale in a satisfying way. It didn't seem to have as much humor as the previous installments, but it still holds up as a family film. As good an ending as it could have been.

Much, much better than Shrek 3, but...that's kind of all I can say about it. I did feel kind of weird that most of the kids in the audience weren't even born when the first movie came out. What happened to all the 7-12 year olds?

The “It’s a Wonderful Life” bit was a clever enough approach to take for the final film (and it was neat to see more ogres), but it felt a bit underexplored and I feel like this franchise is over reliant on “raiding the bad guy’s castle” finales.

The film is lacking much of the wit that defined previous iterations resulting in weak dialog. I also didn't care much about the film's attempt at exploring Shrek's characterisation as the result of that is somehow shallower than the first movie given that Shrek is never really challenged on his beliefs and only gets into conflict as a result of the villain warping things to be far worse than he desired. Speaking of which, the villain was AWFUL and such a far cry from Farquad and Charming.

For me the second best of the franchise as at least it focuses on an interesting tale rather than how many pop culture references it can sneak in. In addition the ending feels like a fairly fitting conclusion to the franchise.

Basically Shrek: The Midlife Crisis. It actually reminds me more of the first one in some ways, focusing more on fairy tale humor and twisting the tales even more than just focusing on pop culture jokes which was nice. Still having the first three movies trying to convince us that there are more to ogres than being stereotypical ogres, then having a movie that laments not being that kind of ogre feels a bit off. It's not as good as the first two, but better than the third in my book.

There are some solid elements to this film, but anything past the first Shrek movie was just unnecessary. What is this? The fourth iteration? Movie is kinda self-referential as it wants to get back to the glory of the first ogre-y goodness we had in Shrek.

The final instalment in the Shrek franchise and not before time, this feels like the horse is being flogged to within an inch of its life. Cheaper, lazier and definitely blander than its predecessors, Forever After squeezes the last drop of enjoyment out of the ogre but still has just enough to make it over the line. Barely. You'll never rewatch it, but you should at least be able to sit through it the once. Shrek was a good film way back when, but how it spawned so many sequels is beyond me.

It's way more ridiculous than any of the first three. Once you start getting into different dimensions/alternate reality it's starts to stretch it and get very touchy, maybe I'm being too picky about a franchise where we have talking donkeys and ogres, but I always thought that the first two provided good stories with some real world relevancy. I'd say it's a little bit better than 3 just because that was so piss poor in every aspect, but nowhere near it's pinnacle.

The darkest of all the Shrek films it seems like this one was definitely worth the payoff. The story was far from original but the idea definitely brought life back to the series. It was a pay off for those who had been with Shrek since the beginning to see a darker approach to telling a story involving Shrek and his lovable group of friends.

Props for finding yet another way to twist some conflict out of the happy ending from the first one with a cool Back to the Future-esque alternative timeline premise, though it ultimately did Shrek's intriguing initial inner struggles a disservice. Besides a decent story, however, there's little to appreciate: The new characters fail to charm (Rumpel is just annoying) and aside from a few more one-liners from Donkey ("I go down smooth, but I come out fighting!") there isn't much to laugh at.

rvw. do the roar lmao i love you daddy. JT ruins 3 when i think about it. the detraction here is how it, naturally, couldn't feel like the gang was back together or show enough of their kids/fam dynamic. then it's just a nice poetic appreciation concept and it hit hard back to getting shrek to see things from Fiona's perspective. what she went through, what it means to her, and what it all means to him. she didnt get to see his side though lool

Well, mud baths, too. And solitude. And being able to relish that sense of dread he used to inspire in the local villagers. OK, so there's a lot missing, Shrek realizes--everything that once defined his identity. "I used to be an ogre," he complains. "Now I'm just a jolly green joke." What he'd give for just one day of angry villagers chasing him with pitchforks and torches.

Shrek Forever After is marginally better than it's predecessor, but on repeated viewings its once again difficult to identify what Shrek sequel this is. Similar to the third film, this fourth installment just wasn't needed. Dreamworks have forgotten what made the first film so unique. And their idea of salvaging the franchise was to just rush into another sequel. This is the unfunniest Shrek film to date and the humour and repetitive pop culture gags have just been milked dry. It's a huge shame.

Much better than Shrek 3, and, yes, I like it better than the first one as well. That doesn't make it great, mind you, but Rumpelstiltskin does make for an excellent villain, which really helps pull the movie together. As unnecessary sequels go, this could have been a lot worse. (See: Shrek the Third... or better yet, don't.)

At first I didn't know what the Shrek was going on. I mean, alternate universes!?! Pretty heady stuff for an animated feature. Once you get used to the new Far Far Away you start to enjoy the different things going on. The Pied Piper was a really funny new bad guy. I loved the fat Puss in Boots. Rumpelstiltskin wasn't the best bad guy but that's ok. I wish the series would have ended on a stronger note since I love this series a lot. Still, I laughed a few times and was really touched at the end

Shrek Forever After is the promised end of the main Shrek franchise, and I really hope that's the case. All of the earlier creativity is gone, and at this point, most of the characters are annoying instead of being insightful or funny. A franchise that started off as an enjoyable diversion from your average animated film has become a raindrop in a sea of many. When not even your voice actors care, it's time to pack it up and move on.

Not as bad as Shrek the Third. I really thought this was an entertaining and solid sequel. It feels borrowed and (almost) pointless, but it's got some fun there and some laughs to serve. Although it is missing a solid soundtrack as the others have. You're better off either A) skipping Shrek the Third and going right to this or B) avoid this AND Shrek the Third.

I love Rumpel, this little villain is great, and I actually had some fun at the beginning -- that segment with Shrek in such a tidy, perfect and boring life --, but, after 40 minutes, I realized Mitchell was just doing the expected thing, remixing old gags so often that it becane impossible to laugh at them -- or even care to pay any attention.

Fairly weak continuation of the Shrek saga starts out well, but becomes too bogged down in Shrek's ruminations on life as a middle-aged parent. Bring back Shrek the ogre! Enjoyable bits by Murphy's donkey and an all-too-brief appearance by Banderas keep it watchable, but a dull story and a too great a reliance on one-note supporting characters for comic relief, make the film a mild ordeal.

My favorite of the Shrek franchise. Sure, the villain almost reached 'Meet the Robinsons' level of suck, but this chapter thankfully relied least out of all of them on pop culture references (often mistaken as "humor") and more on inverting - or, reinventing - what made the characters decent to begin with. What you have left is charm, which was sorely needed.

Many people on IMDB wrote very poor reviews about the movie. However they are idiots who are unrealistic. Making good movies is hard & making sequels is even harder. Shrek Forever after was a very good and enjoyable movie. The storyline was good and there was plenty of fantastic talent from the cast. Rumpelstiltskin was a fantastic villian. When I watched the movie I had subtitles so I caught all the jokes & understood the story. It's good At the very least it should be rated more then 60.

Animated tale about beloved ogre Shrek who, having grown bored with his tame lifestyle, makes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin and winds up in an alternate and alien version of Far Far Away. Not in the league of Shrek 1 or 2. It's lighter on humor and some parts of the story are worn. What Shrek 4 does do is capitalize a little on that and make some cute twists. Miles better than Shrek 3 in any case. ... Yeah, worth watching.
