Despite its now-dated pop culture references, inferior sequels, and massive cultural over-saturation... I absolutely and unabashedly love this movie. The biting satire, the well-drawn characters, the surprising humanity (ogreity?) - it all still puts a huge grin on my face.

This is the single greatest in-joke ever told and my hat is off to the writers, producers, directors, and everyone else involved with creating a beloved classic just to show the world that in every medium there is Cameron Diaz is ultimately just an ogre.

An animated movie that manages to have complex characters and produce great laughs. The ending is perfect, as it manages to give the viewer a happy ending while staying within the tone of the film.

There is something for everyone in the first Shrek movie. Obviously for the kids, but adults can enjoy "20 pieces of silver for the witch" and a lot of playing around with the fairytale stereotypes.

A non-Disney animated flick that's really good. Sadly, the pop culture refernces will make this move go stale in the next few years, but enjoy it now while it's still fresh. The sequal is good too, but will suffer the same fate. Still, it's a touching story that I like and my kids enjoy.

It tries for the laughs of today, and perhaps it will one day be dated by its in-jokes and pop music, but who cares about how it will be 20 years from now if you want to watch it today, right? Shrek is a highly entertaining delight, recommended for everyone -- except perhaps Disney execs.

The fact that the marketing of the sequels was shoved down my throat repeatedly even after I had vomited the second one up, completely tarnishes my memory of this first film, so I have to force myself to remember that I did enjoy it. This series represents everyting that's wrong w/ H'wood: take an enjoyable relatively original movie and then repeat and bleed it till it's dry. The repetitive toilet humor/ pop culture refs of the sequels are no better than those Epic/Scary/Disaster Movies.

Amazing. I have never liked an animated film as much as this one. Hilarious script, well-incorporated nursery rhyme characters/stories, just a great time in general. You definately need to see this.

While it began as a way to parody Disney and fairy tales, it still has a story all its own. Myers does a great job as Shrek, but Murphy even edges him out. The humor is less kiddie than most animated works. Excellent film.

A maybe decent movie ruined by the horrible animation that is Dreamworks and a terrible terrible soundtrack (Smashmouth LOL). It also blows that I saw this probably 5 times in high school, for some reason every teacher loves this movie, probably because it's so safe and does nothing. Pussies.

Shrek is without doubt one of the most original, inventive and hilarious animated films of all time. The story telling, characters and humour caters for all, the voice work is genius, the pop culture references are hilarious and the soundtrack is brilliant. Myers, Murphy, Diaz & Lithgow all provide brilliant voice work and the chemistry between their characters never gets old. And all of the fairy tale characters are hilarious too. Shrek is definitely one of my all time favourite animated films.

I think this and Shrek 2 are easily the best of the Shrek films, and I imagine that's the general public opinion. This was back when Shrek was still the antidote to your typical Disney movie, before becoming the very thing it was mocking. It's charming and witty, nothing spectacular but still a good movie.

I was told as I was a kid that I watched this so much that the VHS eventually broke, funny thing is the only thing remembered from this movie was Smash Mouth's "Rockstar" playing during a montage. As a film, it's great. I think this film is more known for the memes people have made from it more than anything, but this really was one of the better animated kids movies of its time, and its pretty apparent just by the amount of sequels it has gotten over the years.

Hugely overrated. 'Shrek' is not half as imaginative or as funny as it thinks it is. With the exception of Murphy the voice acting is poor beyond belief, and Shrek himself is one of the least likable characters ever created. Yes it has its moments, but the plot seems shallow and rushed and the characters lack depth, and although some may argue that's not important, just look at what Pixar are doing, and then reconsider. The animation is good, but the story and the characters are sloppy at best.

When it's not being "irreverent" and crude, it's loaded with horribly tired gags, vacuous pop culture parodies, and uninspired attempts at fairy tale irony. But it wasn't a total loss. The animation is quite good for its era. The story, when stripped of the awful sense of humor, is actually rather engaging and charming. And I truly enjoyed Murphy's performance. But at the end, the movie pissed away any goodwill it had earned with a jokey montage, over a Smash Mouth cover of "I'm a Believer".

It a little while for me to come around and say I think it’s just as good as everyone makes it out to be. I grew up on the sequels so I guess I forgot how good this first one is. The themes of loneliness and how were so judgmental of others before we even meet them is still so relevant, the animation and jokes have aged pretty well, and the voice work is iconic and irreplaceable. There really is something here for everyone.

Myers' and Murphy's Shrek and Donkey make up an instantly classic odd couple at the heart of this enjoyable animated adventure; their hilariously contrasting personalities add plenty of humour to an already fun journey-plot full of great tunes and imaginative extrapolations on well-known fairy tale characters and premises. Diaz is also great as the feisty Fiona central to the film's touching twist on the typical prince/princess story. There's lots to love in this cleverly written family flick.

While the memorable dialogue and music remains on point, the overall product is (regrettably) a little underwhelming. Eddie Murphy is excellent, the animation stands up (on a small screen, anyway), but many of the jokes are simply not funny. Perhaps I've grown up. *Sigh*

Shrek is an enjoyable animated film for everyone. It is smart, funny, and while it will obviously appeal to children, it doesn't dumb down its content to make it inaccessible to adults. The animation is beautiful, and the world that's created is something that you want to spend a lot of time within. While it does begin to unravel near its conclusion as we stop getting action and move more into dramatic territory, this is still a very fun film that anyone can enjoy.

This film was so very popular when it was released that 'Shrek' mania overshadowed the actual film, which is nothing groundbreaking but a clever 21st century fair tale. Murphy as Donkey does get annoying. While Myers is satisfactory as Shrek, one wonders what the film might have been with Farley as Shrek (he died and was 'replaced' by Myers).

Rewatch. Still love it even though the graphics are bland (is there a market for remastered CG movies?). I also notice Lithgow and Diaz's voices stand out a bit too much. Non-stop jokes and the film picks up when Shrek heads enters the tourney. The other fairy tale creatures don't play as much of a role in this one. I even enjoy some of the sequels, but I can't finish Shrek the Musical. Fav scene: Shrek rescuing Fiona from the tower with one-liners including "well I have to save my ass."

At the time, this was an extremely refreshing backlash to the typically syrupy Disney fairytale films. One could easily argue that it eventually falls into the trap of emulating the very films its' supposed to be lampooning but this doesn't detract from the very genuine charm present throughout. Enchanted does it better, though.

I gotta admit, this film has points deducted for being annoyingly and overly quoted by anyone under the age of fifteen (you weren't there, man. YOU WEREN'T THERE!!). This is definitely a film that really TRIES to make jokes, which means when it hits, it hits hard, and when it misses, it falls to a lava-related death. But there's probably more hits than misses, and it's entertaining enough and has quite good animation.
