Sick of Myself

It's a satire, and often amusing at that, but it has maturity and a careful touch especially in its description of how Signe's mental decline is reinforced and rewarded by people around her. Her "Munchausen syndrome" (I'm a little loath to "diagnose" using psychiatric "disorder" lingo, but loosely speaking) seems deep-seated, but also partly constructed and exacerbated by our social order. More genuine and therefore affecting than Borgli's subsequent surrealist "Dream Scenario".

Leave it to the Scandinavians to make a comedy that has better body horror, is more disturbing and more upsetting than most horror movies out there.

It sure is on the nose and it's obvious early on where Borgli wants to drive his point, but it's done with great panache and absolutely stellar entertainment value. There's a keen eye for social dynamics a la Östlund or Joachim Trier, although it may be a little blunt at times. I thought this film was very, very funny, even when somewhere near the end this became a sort of horror experience that you can't look away from. I thought the boyfriend being a thief was a bit over.

Painfully, hilariously uncomfortable portrait of hedonistic self-absorption takes Gervais style “cringe” humour to its most logical and quietly terrifying end, personified in Thorp’s almighty portrait of the ultimate narcissist, made all the more baffling by the risk far outweighing her meagre rewards. Brilliant in its no-holds-barred depiction of a brutal downhill slide – the degree of enjoyment you take in this blackest of black comedies will vary, but it’s undeniably fascinating.

This appears to have an inexplicable concept that is somewhat not explained, but given how thematic the film is, it really makes sense in this slightly twisted universe. The humour also helps, which is highly identifiable among the generations raised on the digital and online. Although it really just comes to an ending rather than an actual climax, this still works excellently as a modern culture critique that is exploratory without being masturbatory or too serious.

Really funny. It’s more than just “look at this dumb bitch”, but the social, systemic satire is fairly subtle so you don’t feel like you’re being lectured

Film choquant ? Je ne pense pas... cette société où les gens sont autocentrés sur eux mêmes, et comptent sur des choses futiles pour se donner de l'intérêt, c'est pas nouveau, ouvrez les yeux, nos existences sont souvent pourries par des gens comme ça, et ils sont très nombreux. Le film prend le parti d'une victime d'un genre extrême, qui souffre d'un manque d'intérêt sur elle même, et pour les autres. Mais ça manque d'humour, et la fin est nulle. En revanche, j'ai apprécié le duo d'acteurs.

Seeing this movie hurt me a bit. I do not think that I am a big attention whore, yet this thing succeeded in reminding me of every little things I have done in the past to seek small attention. Yikes.

Really good satire. Pretty fun and thought-provoking. Doesn't make you feel like you're being lectured all the time, as opposed to lots of satires nowadays. It has a good structure/touch to it. You can actually easily follow the reasons of Signe's mental decline, as well as her friends' reactions to certain events, etc.

Initially interesting because of its unusualness and incredibly unlikeable main character but I got fed up with it.

The comparison to The Worst Person in the World is well-warranted considering one thinks she's terrible for having feelings whereas the other is a bored rich girl. They both have the same cinematographer too and shot on the same film stocks.

I heard that when Ruben Östlund saw this he got so jealous that he OD'd on Lidexol and died. As Lisa Germano once sang: "and if I fall down in a face of scars I get attention".

Very funny and harrowing at the same time. Can't really tell if it's paying tribute to Ruben Ostlund or just taking the piss. In any case, worth a watch.
