Mehta's close-ups place us into Mahendra's space, and help us to identify with his poverty and powerlessness. And it's that latter quality especially that seems to rule the day as he searches for his son--there are simply no guarantees, no way to ensure that he finds his son. Mehta cares little for Hollywood convention here. Rather, he is interested in linking us with the absolute impotence and vulnerability associated with the human condition--something often masked by money in the West.
