Cold, sterile, sometimes unnerving, and not leaving a huge impression in the end. So that's a few things Side Effects and my love life have in common.

A paranoid drama and topical exposé which also "aspires" to become a trashy thriller, this has a script which is not so much schizophrenic as it is one with some serious genre mood swings. Mara is very good, and Law is even better. The stylistic flourishes are also great. Even though I like several of his films quite a bit, I'd go so far as to say that this is one of Soderbergh's very best efforts.

One of the side effects of working in Hollywood too long is that all of your endings take that unfortunate detour down happy-pants lane. One of the side effects of writing too many Critcker reviews is that when you don't have any witty quips up your sleeve, you end up making some tired play on a movie's title.

Under Soderbergh's skilled hands, Side Effects manages to be an assured and engrossing crime thriller. But the story's adherence to convention and the psychological blandness of its twists and turns make it feel like an above average episode of Law and Order. Nothing more.

Soderbergh's psychological drama about a depressed woman, her trials with prescription drugs, and the legal conundrum surrounding "intent" serves as a pleasing first half of what does feel like two movies in one. The film has a perfect tone and perfect pace, as expected it had an original score worth the price of admission alone, has a mostly-satisfying (but most importantly, unpredictable) conclusion, and is buoyed by pitch-perfect performances from Law & Mara. Well worth the investment!

An inessential but twisty, classy, and enjoyable thriller. One that would be fine in theaters or at home, but it's definitely a case of "the less you know, the better," so if you're gonna watch but aren't planning on doing so right away, run the other way from any details.

What happens when you let Soderbergh direct a shitty Brian de Palma movie? Well, it's still shit, but it's highly entertaining, stylish, fast-paced, fun shit! Brian de Palma: Look, listen, learn and please, oh please send me like 200 bucks. I'm so broke.

Effective as a second-class titillating thriller, thanks to Soderbergh's typically dependable helming, a smart enough twist-laden script and a strong performance by Law. It's nothing riveting -the plot isn't without its contrivances and impossibilities- but the whole thing is definitely a brainier and more compelling endeavor than most late-night potboilers.

A modern-day Hitchcock that does a wonderful job of keeping the audience on their toes, but may go a bit overboard on some of the plot twists. It really does feel like two different films and I would have liked to see more of the first half's atmosphere carried over into the second, but both are very good in their own ways. If this turns out to be Soderbergh's last film, at least it is a significant step up from "Contagion." Mara and Law are fantastic and make up for the abysmal Zeta-Jones.

What could have been a scathing, and eye-opening film on the dangers of prescription medication, actually spins out into a bizarre thriller. On its surface, this idea isn't bad but where the first third felt fresh, though underwritten and obvious, the rest felt very familiar. It's a perfectly acceptable movie, it's just not on the same level as many other Soderbergh movies.

The first section, more or less a critique of the pharmaceutical industry, is quite well done, in typical Soderbergh style. But, after twice switching protagonists, it descends into a disappointingly pedestrian, preposterous thriller. Also, a man is slapped by two women, one of whom is subsequently slapped by a third: it is unlike this director to simply reiterate cinematic staples in such slapdash fashion. That it is permissible to advertise psychiatric drugs on American television is criminal.

This is the type of picture that Hitchcock would make if he were alive: a psychological thriller, with a girly melodramatic subplot, and some simplistic production aesthetics. It's fun as hell, and has something to say about our current times and how depression is the inability to imagine a future. And the old school approach makes it the perfect film you can watch with your grandmother--if you're okay with stopping every few minutes to tell her where she's seen that movie star before.

I am very much conflicted with this movie since I greatly enjoyed the first half and sat in a surreal daze for the second half. Not that the second half was all that bad. In fact it was quite good. But when the movie begins to unravel and you understand the new direction it's taking you kind of wish the evolution would have been a step forward, not a step to the side. Then again, I much prefer a psychological drama over a Hitchcock-like thriller. Either way, cool movie. Rooney Mara rocks.

Soderbergh couldn't care less anymore about stylistic innovations, turning his film into another visual bore by holding firm to his distinct style. But the whole work is boosted by a lean and efficient script that never feels like the product of lazy writing. Where Tatum could've easily been replaced by a lamp, Law and Mara are both excellent.

A very clinical presentation, as if the film itself has taken too much Xanax. This doesn't seem to be the film's intent and it's style comes across as boring, even though the story (and very good acting) supersede it and make the film decently interesting throughout it's length.

The movie starts off slow, but just like taking a pill it takes a while to feel its effects. Once this movie's side effects kick in you may feel some anxiety and a deep love and admiration for Rooney Mara's acting skills. Steven Soderbergh serves up a great thriller. It has you guessing a lot toward the end and he delivers it with a punch once everything is revealed. If you like thrillers or you are just a fan of pharmaceuticals you should probably see this movie.

What starts out as an exploration of our chronically depressed, drug-dependent society turns into a crime drama that still manages to shed light on the issue from a macro-perspective. Meh, I reaaaaaaallly loved this movie (check out the opening scene again! Just amazing!!) until the twist came. I wasn't expecting this kind of twist (turns into an 'I got framed' movie), but it killed the movie. Very good acting by the 4 main actors, even by Tatum! It deserved a better twist!

Trickier than smart, Soderbergh's cold, forensic framing delivers some good acting from Rooney and Catherine -- actually, what a hot couple they make! --, but the plot suffers from an old, simple-minded, Primal Fear-like -- the one I remembered watching this one -- attempt of hiding things to then reveal there was something more later. It works mostly like a corporate, quasi-Gilroyesque thriller about the pharmaceutical industry.

Another workmanlike product in Soderbergh's thoughtful dissection of America's get rich and stay rich at any cost compulsion. Feels very De Palma-ish, with its combination of Hitchcockian suspense and 80s-style thriller sleaze. If this is really Soderbergh's last (he threatens to retire more often than Jay-Z), he's certainly going out on a high note. Watching the plot unfold is gripping every step of the way. Mara is excellent, but Jude Law is every bit her equal and impressed the hell out of me.

[Spoilers] Soderbergh breaks out his favourite yellow camera lens (again) & delivers a real treat that's only let down by a messy last third. The tension created up to the final sleep-walking scene is palpable & I don't mind admitting I jumped like a wimp when Tatum bit the dust (even if you could see it coming!). After this it loses its way somewhat becoming a mystery, crime, thriller mish-mash that lacks a focus & atmosphere. But this is a well written & performed film that comes recommended.

It's a touching and poignant portrayal of the complexities of our psychiatric system until it decides to go all Da Vinci code on us. But what makes the second act so obnoxious is how neatly it fits into a reactionary reassertion of patriarchal norms: a kind-hearted father figure must disentangle a web of feminine deceit and reassert his Freudian authority? The whole film is like Soderbergh & Burns lovinglingly crafted a beautiful cake and then took the foulest, messiest diarretic shit on it.

Jude Law is awesome in this psychological thriller that starts off about the side effects of drugs but develops into a more sinister story. Rooney Mara was marvelous and convincingly plays a disturbed young woman battling severe depression. But all is not what it seems. Some of the plot turns seemed a little too convenient. Basically a brilliant devious plan is unraveled by a small amount of tricky deception. Catherine Zeta-Jones talents were almost entirely wasted in this. Superbly shot.

If this is Steven Soderbergh's final feature, it's a worthy capper to his career: a Hitchcockian thriller about a troubled young woman (Rooney Mara) and her psychiatrist (Jude Law), who prescribes her an experimental new drug--with results that turn both their lives upside down. The twists come thick and fast, especially in the final third, but it never feels contrived, thanks to Scott Burns' crisp script, Soderbergh's handling, and superb performances from Law, Mara--and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Side Effects is fine if you want a passable thriller that you'll forget about the next day. That's about all it equates to. Just don't go in thinking that the trailers are a solid representation of the finished product, because they are very deceptive. SPOILER ALERT Channing Tatum was miscast. I would have stabbed him to if he was trying to impersonate a sophisticated businessman. In all seriousness though everything before he died was simply ok. Rooney Mara does a good job of saving that part of the movie from being completely horrible. However after his death the film really starts to get interesting. Perhaps all the different angles fail to mesh together, certainly the second half of the film appears to undermine at least some of the commentary in the first half. And yet, it still works as a compelling thriller with an interesting resolution and great acting. All the bits of social and political commentary may add up to less than their parts, but they still provide a rich backdrop to the film and an interesting context for the plot.

I think the best part of this movie is the cinematography - Soderbergh really captures a feeling of cold and stark isolation, even in environments with a warm colour palette. Rooney Mara is excellent, although Jude Law also pulls off a good performance. The plot? Little bit trickier. As many have said, it pulls the rug out from underneath the audience, but think of the movie as an episode of Columbo, merged with a bit of Melancholia. And Wild Things. It's a bit of a mess on paper but its good.
