This is haunted by a feeling of claustrophobia and impotence of individuals, demise of church, demise of trust in states and armies, ending up in an absolute nihilism where family members can only find any consolation by quarreling and yelling each other. Every scene creates a feeling of ensnarement: opening scene with traffic on the street, 2 hours long home 'sequence', and Lary and his wife trapped in their car. Very pessimistic and full of black humor but somehow not that satisfying as well.

Long takes seem to have become something of a fashion. Movie didn't quite do enough to justify the running time.

Could've been a little tighter in the runtime but overall great.

A busy, noisy and lengthy ensemble drama about turmoil during a family get-together, thick with dialogue and highly textured characters and relationships, which I'm sure I wasn't able to decipher fully - it's just that demanding. Nevertheless it's more than a tour de force. I think it's Puiu's most intricate film to date, the mise-en-scene is astoundingly detailed, and it really makes you feel like a fly on the wall in an actual home. The recurring argument about 9/11 sort of anchors it.

A pressure cooker losing steam when the story moves out or the small apartment after two terrific hours.
