The movie really captures the look and feel of the Silent Hill game franchise perfectly. Though I've played the games I can see that while Silent Hill does work well as a video game, it doesn't work quite as well as a movie. There are some dialog problems and I'm sure that people unfamiliar with the games will undoubtedly be lost or confused at certain things. Still, it looks and feels great.

Most of the points are from the excellent experience I had watching this in the theater with my wife who, with her head buried in my chest, squeezed my hand so hard a nickel popped out.

The first film to accurately capture moderna adventure video game archetypes - cigarette lighter as useful source of light, unusual items as keys to hidden areas, whited out 'congratulations' screens making way for expositionary 'ending' sequences, even needless backtracking causing pointless peril. The hysterically melodramatic opener threatens to immediately derail the film, but once the action moves to the draw distanced, post apocalyptia of Silent Hill, the movie picks up considerably.

Rises above just being a video game movie where you point and go hey its Pyramid Head. Captures the feel of when the Silent Hill grime starts to pour out. I use to play resident evil games in the dark in the basement when they came out, I needed a light on for Silent Hill lol.

Although the movie gets off to a very awkward start, halfway through the film it gets very interesting and remains incredibly visually stunning. Not quite as spooky as the game, but that probably wasn't the intent. I also liked the ending.

My inner fanboy tingled with joy over seeing so many familiar locations, characters, creatures and scenes from the games. The movie was spot on too, and most importantly the atmosphere was perfect. Kudos to Gans and his crew for understanding the spirit of Silent Hill and bringing it to life so faithfully. Unfortunately, it does shed a harsh light on the fact that the story of Silent Hill (like most J-horror) is a hodgepodge of meaningless mumbo-jumbo.

The best video-game adaptation thus far. Some cool monsters, and an interesting story, but terrible acting and a scene that insults your intelligence by explaining everything. Sean Bean's scenes are pointless and were obviously tacked on. This had a lot of potential and it was mostly wasted.

The first half was definitely impressive; some of the most hellish imagery and cool camerawork I have seen in recent horror flicks, and it just oozed evil atmosphere. A shame that as soon as the other villagers enter the story the tone really shifts and the movie never recovers the tension it had built up before.

I am re-ranking this because the film's experience completely changed for me this go-around, in a very positive way. Admittedly, some dialogue is rock-bottom, chia-pet-speaking dumb. But the film nails its desired tone of depraved, shit-and-blood eroticism. The narrative trajectory is, of course you guessed it, obvious - but I'll ask this: what is the film saying about women here?

Pryamid, The Nurses, and the Lying Figures all should not be even near this movie. They are representations of James Sunderland's damaged psyche. Why in the world would they be causing chaos for a woman who simply lost her child? I understand that these monsters are given reasons, as they're connected to the girl Alessa, but that's not what Silent Hill is. Silent Hill is subtle, disturbing, and lost. This film is none of those things.

Interesting, if a little disappointing, adaption of the video game. There was too much of the feeling that if you hadn't played the games you wouldn't know what the hell was going on, coupled with certain things that were put in purely to please fans of the video game. Much more could have been made of this.

The sense that the town is controlling you and forcing you to walk a thin line between fear of being alone and fear of not being alone is absent. My own pet praise of the games, but maybe a little hard to pull off in a passive medium like film... Oh, the Galt speech in the middle ruined it for me above all else. Screeching halt. Really anything that happened in the church blew. Pyramid head was also lame. DID like the Fulci ending. Christophe Gans must have killed the boss wrong.

Extremely good movie version of a brilliant game altough not scary at all (the game is a million times more frightening). The atmosphere recriates the look of the game and the movie is like a big Twilight Zone episode with a surprisingly creative story, despite the usual bad CGI Hollywood stuff. Imaginative, with brilliant visuals and trully faithfull to the game despite being politicaly correct on the gore. Feels more like an excelent dark fantasy movie than an horror piece. More please.

When they had to stop and actually explain everything to you, the movie took a huge nosedive. It ended up coming off as very B-movieish and lame. Good. Based on the popular horror videogame. The film perfectly captures the game's grimy bleak atmosphere.
