You know, I put this off for a while because it looks like some cheesy, schmaltzy 50's musical about love and shit (and I bet I'm not the only one to get that impression). But my god, when I watched this, I was laughing my ass off. It's hilarious, heartwarming, and puts a huge grin on your face. The musical sequences are fantastic, the story is great, the Technicolor is amazing, and it's just a ridiculous amount of fun.

I'll admit I've never been a musical fan at all so I've put off watching this for a very, very long time. It looked like lots of singing and dancing and romance and everything I dislike packed into a film. Just as in Criminal5's review I ended up laughing all throughout the film. The dancing was impressive, even to me, and the music great. The only flaw was that some of the musical numbers went on a bit too long. Aside from that this is heart-warming, family-fun entertainment.

The only part I didn't like was the lengthy "Broadway Melody" ballet. I loved the "crazy veil" section of it, but 13 minutes of song and dance without any narrative development is just too much. But for the rest of the movie, I was grinning with glee. The gorgeous Technicolor is stunning on DVD.

If there was one film that ended my skepticism over the musical genre, this was it. Singing In The Rain is a fantastic mix of classic songs, some of the best choreography ever filmed and makes for a wonderful parody of the Hollywood's transition into sound and of musicals in general. Donald O'Connor and Gene Kelly particuarly stand out with some great footwork. It's colourful, jolly, incredibly watchable and downright uplifting. Both a true classic and a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

As I usually dislike musicals, I was overwhelmingly fed up with skepticism towards this particular film. After I finally saw it, that very element turned into love for this genre. Singin' in the Rain is a fantastic movie with a whole soundtrack and orchestration of soon to be classic songs married to sensational choreography and heartwarming, light laughs. Massive amounts of fun, and one should be hypnotized by its cheerful message. A definite masterpiece.

Gene Kelly delirious with a 103 fever doing the main big number then immediately puking and shitting everywhere at cut. Dignity. Gene Kelly was so good, he'd just be CGI today. As it should be, imagine tap dancing so hard your feet just explode in blood. How did you lose your feet, the war? No I was a background dancer on a Gene Kelly movie. Finding out how mean Gene Kelly was behind the camera is a hoot, I'd love to be yelled at by him, he'd get so worked up he'd twirl around me in rage.

This movie is like the Pyramids of Giza. I admire the the technical amount of work required to pull it off, while at the same time shuddering at the amount of human suffering that must have gone into it, and at the utter pointlessness of the end result. Every joke sounds like it has been rehearsed too many times. Every smile is a bit too big. Every dance number comes off perfectionistic and completely unspontaneous - the opposite of the desired effect, I think. I did not enjoy this movie at all.

I'd say the greatest musical. Jean Hagen is a hoot--and the big finale with Cyd Charisse is a delight (jet engines and all). Then there's Donald O'Connor dancing on the ceiling and Gene Kelly dancing through milk...I didn't think I was going to like it, but I did. I thought it was great!

Perhaps the most self-aware musical of all-time. At a point in history when sing and dance movies were recycling paper-thin plots, this unique brand of artistic expression offers a gentle parody of Hollywood's transition to 'talkies.' Each musical number is elaborately choreographed and holds back nothing, a few times becoming self-indulgent (purposefully). The camera work is beyond impressive; superb cinematography especially during the veil performance. Honest comedy and beautiful scenery.

Everyone talks about their misguided preconceived notions of this movie, so I was hoping to like it a lot more. I can't get into it, though. It's just so happy-go-lucky, with overwrought acting and a jumbled mess of technicolor. Very dated, though it's not terrible. The choreography is really great, and not just during the music numbers; all the actors perform with wonderful physicality. There are a few very funny moments scattered throughout as well.

I don't really like musicals, but this was funny, clever, and entertaining with short, well performed pieces. That is until Broadway melody appeared, an excessive and indulgent 10 minutes of everything I hate about musicals. Were it not for this painful sequence, this would a top tier film for me. If you actually do like musicals, this is the best I've ever seen.

I like Fred Astaire. I like musicals to be musicals, not all this meta bollocks. It's the simplicity that they should have that gives them their charm. Contrived. Annoying. Overrated. It's why I dislike Shawshank and their brethren; it's got no personality of its own; made for market. ====== 2022 rewatch update extravaganza: feels like cheating of fred astaire with gaudy, hyperactive chipmunks.

Never really having been into musicals, I was really impressed and massively entertained by the dancing choreography and especially Gene Kelly's singing is wonderful, the highlight being his "Singin' in the Rain" song. Choreographically I was most impressed by Donald O'Conner's dancing during his "Make'em Laugh" song. It's incredibly funny, and really jaw-dropping. Aside from the dancing and singing, the story isn't that special, but it shows Hollywood in an interesting stage of its life.

It's funny how most users commence their review with: "I'm not a fan of musicals". I'm no exception to that, but this film manages to exude a warm and vivacious atmosphere, and I have the cast, soundtrack and electrifying dance numbers to thank for that (Donald O'Connor stole the show). Arguably the best musical ever made.

What a weird movie "Singin' in the Rain" is. It starts as somewhat of a love story when Don jumps into Kathy's car while running away from a mob of admirers. This all occurs on the backdrop of Hollywood's transition from silent to talkies. The singing and dancing is mostly great, but what makes it weird is that it slowly forgets it has a plot as it goes. At one point, Don pitches an entirely different movie, which we watch for about 20 minutes, before going back to the original plot.

Singin' in the Rain is a thoroughly entertaining musical! Even though I'm not much of a musical person myself, I can see why it's being hailed as the finest musical of all time. It pretty much has everything. From the iconic scenes to great performances from Gene Kelly, Jean Hagen, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor. Not to mention the romance isn't shoved down your throat for no reason. I watched this for the first time in 2016 and I have to say the film truly stands the test of time.

Wow, I don't usually care for musicals. A little too fancy-free for me. Impromptu song-and-and-dance does not jive well with reality or even storytelling if you ask me. But you could not ask for a more a magical musical in a lifetime than this. The dance number where the guy beats himself up pre-dates and nearly beats Jim Carrey in physical comedy. The title song sequence is everything you have heard it to be. It seems like the meaning of cinema.

provided you begin the movie shortly before the title song it will not disappoint, but other than that there is bad acting, bad writing, forgettable songs, and only plot enough to provide a half hour, if that, of material. one must not discount the amazing choreography and if only a few very good songs, unfortounately music is not enough to make a great musical.

Good story, good songs, good characters, colour, lights, music, dance... This movie has probably everything a good musical should have, it's an interesting story about the death of silent movies and the birth of a new genre, and has one of the best (if not the best, I'm not that much into dancing) dancers ever. Gene Kelly doesn't even walk like normal people. If it wasn't 1952 I would bet Gene Kelly is CG, because he has to be breaking some physic laws while dancing.

Wonderful, iconic musical is performed with gusto by the starring trio, backed by an impeccably chosen supporting ensemble. Glorious technicolor cinematography, married to an intelligent, insightful screenplay which (albeit in a light-hearted way) is a fascinating exploration of the change from silent to sound. O'Connor's MAKE EM LAUGH is still an infamous highlight, and Hagen as the shrewish Lina is a delight, though her character is arguably humiliated on a much grander scale than deserved!

Well, that was an unexpected disappointment. I think the major fault would be too much plot, not enough character, & outside of the choreography it's really not that well made (I'll take Minnelli over Donen any day). The lavish, penultimate musical piece that Kelly adores so was also done much better in An American In Paris.

I'm almost inclined to declare this to be the first postmodern film (as i'm pretty sure others have), or possibly even the ultimate postmodern film. But to do so would be rather counter-intuitive to the sheer unadulterated joy that is above all the film's raison d'être. There's a broadway scene which I always forget about. I bring it up because it's suprising to see something coarsing with so much sexual energy in a 1952 musical comedy. It's a great scene though, just when you thing it's beginning to drag they take it up a notch and Cyd Charisse's trailing dress takes off into the air, becoming a third dancer in the frame.

A film as cheeky, sparkly, and graceful as Gene's smile, Donald's eyes, and Debbie's voice. It's silliness, songs, and dances (always excellent, often together-see the successfully hilarious “Make ‘em Laugh”), with some plot thrown in between. A tad more self-indulgent in Hollywood glitz than it is satirical of it, but the meta angle is still a nice touch and it’s clear the film (even Mr. Perfect Teeth) is not afraid to laugh at itself (see the disastrous early screener of The Dueling Cavalier).
