Single All the Way (2021)
Desperate to avoid his family's judgment about his perpetual single status, Peter (Michael Urie) convinces his best friend Nick (Philemon Chambers) to join him for the holidays and pretend that they're now in a relationship. "I want to make a terrible movie in Canada--everyone else has!"--Scott Thompson, Canadian. Starts off like a really gay "Sex and the City" (transplanted to--ostensibly--L.A.), then degenerates into a flamboyantly gay Hallmark Christmas movie. Jennifer Coolidge sounds disconcertingly like Carol Channing much of the time. All I could think was, "Poor James!"

Not bad, I'm glad to see Michael Urie in a lead role and it's always a pleasure to see Jennifer Coolidge, especially if she tones her loud persona down a bit. The plot does well to avoid tropes. I appreciated that both love interests were compelling. The family was far too annoyingly invested in Urie's love life. Nice to see a gay romance that isn't just substituting gays into a straight story. Fav scene: the dad (Bostwick) having a heart-to-heart with the friend (Chambers) in the garage.

Clearly these two nice gay men need a bunch of straight people to decide what they want out of life, while NEVER BLINKING UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Harmless, Peter and Nick make a cute couple, but it's fucking dreadful in most other respects.
