Surprisingly restrained war movie: sure the German fleet commander is portrayed a little villainous but really I felt the movie said that victory in war is about surviving the conflict rather than destroying opponents. The story telling is impeccable - keeps the audience absolutely clear on where we are, what we're looking at, and what is happening at every moment. It's not just the ships and planes that are handled well - the camera sits and watches humans trying to make sense of devastation.

The promise of the cast doesn't fully deliver on this would be epic. An interesting historical insight but somehow the human stories on both sides get lost. Set very much in its time and with good attention to detail the style of acting is out of place with a real feel of the sixties. Lots of potential but for me failed to deliver

OK World War 2 drama but doesn't really add anything to the genre. The acting and the story telling is fairly restrained.

Possibly one of the most banal war films I've seen, it's still a rather entertaining slice of WW2-melodrama.
