In this emotionally compelling documentary, Sister Helen opens a private home for recovering addicts and alcoholics in the South Bronx after the death of her husband and two sons. The film's fly-on-the-wall technique succeeds in capturing the day-to-day existence of Sister Helen and the various residents of the home. (imdb)

The cinematography is awful & at one point it seems like the film has nothing new to say, but as some major conflicts arrive between people you've come to care about it's all pretty compelling stuff. It would've been especially interesting to compare the success rates of Sister Helen's unorthodox therapeutic methods to the traditional far more coddling approaches (given the awful recidivism rate of traditional addiction therapy), but the people & real life are too profoundly moving to complain

A very heartwarming documentary about a nun from the Bronx that helps addicts overcome their addictions through tough love. Helen is such a powerful woman who loves these men, in some cases she is probably the only person who loves some of them. This movie shows the power of that love and the fact that all of these people need a second chance and they need to have someone who cares about them. There were moments of this documentary where I balled my eyes out because of the warmtg.
