Umekichi, a geisha in the Gion district of Kyoto, feels obliged to help her lover Furusawa when he asks to stay with her after becoming bankrupt and leaving his wife. However her younger sister Omocha tells her she is wasting her time and money on a loser. She thinks that they should both find wealthy patrons to support them. Omocha therefore tries various schemes to get rid of Furusawa, and set themselves up with better patrons. (imdb)

Remarkably modern in dialogue and plot but having many of the pitfalls of an older film. See the reviews here that describe it for more eloquently than I ever could. OK without being startling.

The tension between the sexes is thematised by two geisha sisters, one of whom represents the attitude that it's a war in which only calculation and strategy can succeed and the other the attitude that only sentiment and a concern for appearances can ever achieve peace. Probably these are intended as questions for modernising Japan as a whole, but it's the tragic cry against the state of sexual relations at the end of the film that leaves an impression. Really quite an interesting narrative.

A moving early Japanese film about the lives of geisha. Two sisters take opposing views of their lifestyle, and at the end it's questionable which one has the "right" point of view. The movie is shot like a play, so there are almost no close-ups (or much movement at all); sometimes it is hard to distinguish people from far away and in the dark black and white of the film. It's a decent period piece, but not essential viewing.

There is a good story here but it's not told in a very engaging way. Through static shots filled with dialogue scenes you learn about the lives of two sisters who both seek happiness. My biggest complain about this movie and why I could rate this higher was the fact that not a single character, not one, was a likeable or even a decent character. All the male characters are shown to be selfish and petty and the two sister while polar opposites aren't any better ...
