Perkele. There's something to be said for the idea of an immortal Finnish Crocodile Dundee (the personification of the coolest version of the national stereotype) slaughtering Nazis in the most sadistic way possible. Which, don't get me wrong, they're nazis, it's hard to disagree with it, especially when it's done with this much style and fun. Does "sisu" really mean "kill every motherfucking last one"? I'll leave that to the Finns to decide.

Love: the dog lives, Helander does a lot to establish an atmosphere that is otherworldly, hellish and lonely, really showcasing how alone this guy is in the Finnish Lapland. It's basically a character itself. The rest is less inspired but still good, such as Tommila's gritty, mostly silent performance. The action is gory but kind of corny sometimes, I think they could have done more with it. Really, the tone/atmosphere is the star here.

too serious for what it is, not serious enough to be anything else. i expected way more "over the top"-stuff, and i don't mean arm wrestling.

It's exactly what you'd expect if you were told Inglorious Bastards and Mad Max: Fury Road were going to have a baby!

A frustrating failure of promise. There is gore, and nazis die, but instead of one determined man beating up a bunch of fascists it’s mostly a bunch of fascists beating up one man. The pursuit is flipped, the violence is mostly against our hero, and that he survives is hardly satisfying when the deaths of the speaking nazis are completely bloodless. Shoot the rapist’s balls off! Nail the captain to the bomb through his jewel blue eyes! C’mon! Disappointing, but gorgeously filmed.

This is just such simple, bloody fun. I liked that the main character was an older guy and a veteran. Works much better than some young action hero. It works even better when the character just survives through all odds, because he's clearly been made resilient and cunning over the years. This movie understands that it doesn't need a complicated plot and a huge cast of characters to create an effective story and that in fact, sometimes simplicity just works best.

Well done Finnish Lapland Western kind of story during World War II when Nazis were leaving and burning everything they can. Aksel Hennie made a role of his life. Story includes lots of funny symbolism.

I was pretty sold on this from the first trailer I saw. Satisfyingly gruesome and gets its tone right, while maintaining a sense of fun about its action and kills. Some seem to have found it straddling a frustrating middle ground of "too serious" and "not over-the-top enough", despite a pretty lavish, indulgent second-half, but this gave me what I wanted: a one-man wrecking crew centering a stylish and atmospheric kill-fest, with some intense high-points like the minefield and hanging scenes.

Not a lot of talking in this movie. Great action, a lot of dead nazis and a doggy that survives :). It's kind of a Finnish Western and I liked the chapters in between. Women play a strong role too

A skillfully crafted action film with an absorbing dramatic arc that quietly builds into a deafening crescendo of bloody, gory, Nazi killing.

Far more enjoyable than I expected. I loved the revenge Western feel and the central near silent performance of the protagonist was outstanding. The female victims were given a satisfying story arc too.

This film has a refreshingly simple concept. The Nazis want to kill Tommila and take his gold. He wants to kill all of them. There's very little dialogue (Tommila says nothing until the very end of the film), the action is very economical and well-staged, it's very gory and has a wickedly black sense of humour.

I had fun with it. It doesn't take itself too seriously, yet still tells a noble tale of clear good vs. evil. Think of it like Finnish John Wick vs. Nazis. You don't have to think too deeply to be invested, the action pays off, and it's got some truly inventive shots. Oh, and there's a cute dog.

Tarantino meets John Wick mashup flick w European stoicism. It features some sublime kills and also some way over the top scenes. Quite enjoyable overall, but has its limitations. Friendly 7.8

A back to basics grindhouse affair, yet sophisticated and elevated. Reminded me of some strange combination of Prey, Fury Road, and Valhalla Rising. If that makes sense.

The hero is very easy to root for & there's so much brutal violence on display this should've been a real hit, but the problem is that the story keeps increasing the implausibilities. Action heroes always push & even snap through the required suspension of disbelief, but this drives through it & keeps running over it. This hero can pick up & toss mines; inexplicably stay underwater for Aquaman-level periods of time; pickaxe his way THROUGH the bottom of a FLYING plane: & survive the huge crash.

Save one or two bits of ridiculousness, it's a riotous good time. If you don't want to think much and you think you might enjoy watching an action hero bathe in Nazi blood while oozing style and machismo, you can't do better than this.

Gorily obliterating nazis is always a fun time, but Sisu really needed more story and characterization to hang its hat on. From the same writer/director of Rare Exports and Big Game, both of which I thought sucked. Sisu is a huge step up for Helander, but his shortcomings as a filmmaker are still present, unfortunately.

They don't make'em like this anymore. Even the visibly popular John Wick doesn't pack this much punch in the action since you are numbed to too much of it. I like the caricature characters who still behave plausibly and avoid evil laughter.

I honestly haven't enjoyed a war/action/revenge movie this much in quite a long time. This is flawed for sure, but so very satisfying. I had several huge outburst of laughter and cheer near the end. It's a slow burn that's worth every minute. I recommend this one as it has tons of atmosphere, character and many unprecedented events.

"Sisu" is an action-packed film with an immortal protagonist, Nazi kills, and a touch of humor. It pays homage to Spaghetti Westerns with Sergio Leone-esque music and macabre humor. Jorma Tommila's performance as Aatami Korpi, the Finnish army's John Wick, is captivating. Stylized cinematography and stunts make the action enjoyable, but the film lacks suspense due to the protagonist's immortality. It feels repetitive and doesn't reach the heights of other action classics.

Yes, please. This is a throwback to old action films, as you could easily see this being played by John Rambo's grandfather or something. It's a simple story, over the top secret badass kicking Nazi butt with fun kills and a satisfying conclusion. Not much more to ask for.

Possible the best or at least best directed Helander film. It's very brutal, gory, and makes good use of the Finnish Lapland and sound design to make it feel bigger than it is. Almost 60 years old Tommila carries the film in a mostly silent, very physical role. He and the director are related, and his son is also part of the cast. The whole film has a family feel to it, and it's great that Helander is doing his own thing and not taking a paycheck on a random horror sequel or a superhero film.
