There's a Photoshop technique wherein you duplicate the layer, apply a subtle amount of Gaussian blur, set that layer to Hard Light and adjust the opacity to taste. Well, they made a movie out of that.

How can a film with giant robots, submarine planes and a Noah's Ark space rocket be so relentlessly dull? The plot is terrible, too absurd even for the medium it's inspired by, and the characters are awfully written and poorly acted - Law's charmless and Paltrow's insufferable. The digital settings don't create an engaging world but instead feel as unpleasantly artificial as the dialogue. The final line - a lame gag - is somehow the most painful moment of all.

2 problems w/ this attempt to recreate old sci-fi B-movies. 1. However bad the efx & sets of those old films looked, they looked real. But the CGI here never looks real so it looks wrong, unlike Sin City's CGI which recreated comicbook art. 2: The cliched 1-dimensional characters of those films shouldn't be recreated unless it's to deconstruct them. They were acceptable b/c they were B-movies, unlike this. Despite all this there are thankfully still alot of interesting looking action set pieces

Given the concept & attempted artistry that went into this movie, and how generally inoffensive it *should* technically be, I'm really surprised by how much I hate it. But I absolutely despise it. I felt as though my soul was being sucked out of my eyes watching it. I felt a great withering evaporation of self in the banality and falseness of visuals that should be so much more inspired. Like the chunibyou girls who act out anime in casual conversation in ways that make you hate anime forever.

I'm not sure why didn't I watch this before. It's a pretty interesting movie, visuals are so good. But visual effects and lines are childish or amateur-ish which I think that's the intention. I don't know if it's a comic adaptation or something else. Also, Paltrow was off the limits again. I really love her and find her talented as hell. She made a great job with the acting intentionally bad if you know what I mean.

Elaborate homage to Saturday matinee serials and their vision of the future. All the settings were rendered on a computer (designed by Conran) and look great, but they only underscore the film's artificiality. Those old serials were energetic; this film is inert. Ribisi and Jolie seem to be having the most fun.

Visually, Sky Captain is great. The blend of 30's style, high-tech technology and CGI-animated scenery reminissent of graphic novels works excellently. It's just a shame that the rest of the film falls so flat with an uninspired script, patchy plotline and all too frequent unexplained and impossible scenes (diving underwater would not repair a ruptured fuel tank). Behind all the scenery the filming of the film in front of a green screen shows in the seemingly confused and inconsistant acting.

I'm still not sure who the villian was or if there was infact a point to this film!
The main character does fly around in an old World War Two plane that had some gadgets taken from a James Bond movie taped onto the cockpit to make an overall amazingly easy sleepy time while watching the 'Action' scenes! "O no!" "Giant Robots attacking! " "We need the Sky Captain!" Sky Captain then uses grappling hook to wrap robot's leg.... Star Wars didn't do that in Empire Strikes Back.

It's interesting. This movie was aiming for a pastiche of 1930s adventure serials... and ended up feeling like a 1990s FMV game. But honestly? Both of those genres are pulpy fun, and this movie worked pretty well in that vein. The main thing I would ask for would be more banter - the snappy dialogue and character interactions are absolutely the best thing here.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow captures the feeling of pulpy, comic booky propaganda-adjacent media of WWII for better but also for worse. The production is inspired and contains excellent sound, visuals, and designs. However, the same hollow, vapid tone of the source-material matches the characters who are dull and the plot meanders along at an equally droll pace.

Oof. Sky Captain is a love letter to 30's Hollywood, but the only person who seemed to understand that was the director. The visuals were stunning for what they were going for, and the world was fantastic, yet between a cliched script, and a great cast who didn't seem to care, the vision was lost. It retains some of its okayness, but it's got a lot to bring it down as well.

The usage of monochromatic properties is both a blessing and a curse. It has a very distinct visual style and I embrace it for that, but unlike something like Sin City, which also has a unique digital backlot style, the visuals don't always pop. It's kind of hard to see things once in a while. Low on story, interesting blend of genres like action, adventure, pulpy film noir, sci-fi. Ultimately, a fun family adventure with a few laughs here and there.

This movie could be the poster child for the phrase "Style over substance". People say it's to be respected for being one of the first films to have a complete CGI background, but I say it's a perfect example why we shouldn't be doing that; everything is so over saturated with "effects" and nothing feels real. I get it's an homage, and I get it's stylized, but it's so obnoxious and dated. Jude Law was cool, but why the hell did Paltrow's character keep saying out loud whatever was being shown?

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow looked like an enjoyable and family friendly film. And whilst kids will undoubtedly enjoy it, personally I thought it was all style over substance. It felt like a Zack Snyder film for kids. The content and concept is completely uninteresting and it's a shame because I think this had potential and I wanted to enjoy it. Law, Paltrow & Jolie all give cardboard cut out performances. And whilst the set pieces are fun, they're too glossy, animated and cartoonish.

Footnotes: 1. I didn't think she was pretty till I watched Repulsion and realized she's a poor man's Catherine Deneuve. 2. Surprisingly flat and uninvolving fantasy yarn seems to be striving for an old fashioned, INDIANA JONES-ish feel, but unnatractive computer animation, and one-note performances from Law and Paltrow, basically sink it. I felt like I really wasted my time watching this. Jude Law looked really uncomfortable in the role of the Sky Captain and this movie makes Gwyneth Paltrow look like a B-Movie actress.
The writing was really bad, so bad in fact, I kept looking over at my wife and making faces after certain lines were spoken.
I also felt like the C.G.I. in this was very bad for 2004. Bad.

Some of the visuals were really, really good. The robot invasion of New York, for example. I think it would have looked better in black and white, but the studio probably insisted on colour. I feel like this film was supposed to be a joyful throwback, less reliant on plot and more reliant on tone. I only got that joyful feeling once when Sky Captain shot a Robbie style robot in the face. Other than that it was just me noticing interesting shots. Not really an enjoyable experience.

Look, I'm fine with occasionally indulging in films that are more style than substance... but the film still has to offer at least *some* substance. Sadly, all of the fun, charm and thrilling adventure of the serials from the 30's and 40's is missing and, instead, its just dull and tedious.
