You know a movie is REALLY GAY when the oh my god that girl has a penis reveal is the straightest thing in the movie. Oh my God. I think the costumes for the boys and girls got mixed up and no one cared.

Watched & graded as one of those films that's so bad it's great. Like The Room, this doesn't disappoint in the least & has to be seen to be believed. It's tempting to say this is Friday the 13th as directed by Ed Wood, but the sensibility here is 1 of a kind: sexual menace seeps from every scene, (which is extra bizarre given that the teens in this are junior high level)& the director actually has some imagination for shooting murders. Unfortunately he can't draw a decent performance from anyone

Not since the first time I saw "Fight Club"(1999) has there been a time where I was more depressed at the end of seeing a movie after already having the twist ending spoiled for me. Although certainly noteworthy for other weird, grimy, short-short wearing cheese, the "whodunit?" and infamous final reveal are really what make this slasher a must-see cult classic.

A must-see slasher film. For its off-the-charts weirdness and political incorrectness. For the fashion sense among the older kids which also has to be seen to be believed. And, of course, for the bafflingly deranged and quite terrifying ending.

Hahahahahaha...sorry, the unnecessary twist ending really puts the icing on this otherwise okay/mediocre camp slasher. Some of the effects were pretty cool (moving blisters on the cook), other kills they just seemed to have lost interest (bees took too long; arrow didn't waste any time). Awesome cutoff tops and tight shorts on the men. The difference between staff and campers was unclear to me. WTF giant pot why. Too many pedophiles. Fav scene: water snake crawling out of the guy's mouth.

Definitely a schlocky blast if you're into 80s dead teenager horror, poorly made and generally poorly acted to be certain but a pure cheesy pleasure if you're in the right mindset (and possibly have a little alcohol in you). And that ending is terrific!

Live reviewing from the second half of this film. I need me a pair of those Adidas shorts, I found the mental image of myself in those very pleasing. Murder by bees is a neat trick, it should be used more often, imo. The film is very cheesy, and at the same time kinda weird, like those dream scenes. Slashing begins, decently done. I think I predict the twist. Love the fake mustache on the cop. OMG DAT EDING!!!1 My rating went up 15 points for that moment of wonder. <3

For all but the final minute of the runtime, it's an unremarkable teen slasher - perfectly watchable, but lacking enough menace and grisliness to be truly memorable. The shocking twist ending however makes this a minor classic of the sub-genre, and the final shot is genuinely haunting.

There's something profoundly weird about Sleepaway Camp that makes me wonder just how much of it is being deliberately subversive, how much is just poor movie-making, and how much is just the idea of having young teenagers played by actual young teenagers. But yes, the twist is one that actually works in that it changes what you think you saw before, and the film deserves props for sticking to its guns far more than most of its ilk.

This film is so wild, with an odd sexually charged energy, that it's hard not to love. The whole time, I was wondering how big of a pain it'd be to have Judy's hair. The camp cook is not just a pedophile, but we get a long scene of him discussing this and him staring at the young girls. We also pretty much see full penis in those short-shorts.

Most of this movie is pretty bad. They seemed to not be able to settle on a genre. However, the ending - goddamn mind-blowing. I mean, there's the obvious twist, then there's the shocking secondary twist, but there's also the bizarre & amazing way they do it. I'm not sure it makes the whole film any better exactly, but I do think it's worth watching. Oh & there's also a message in the film that I can't really interpret any other way than homophobic. Certainly not a film I'll forget anytime soon.

That ending sure is something. I should have expected it, I had all the pieces, but it still came as a surprise. The ending aside, this is a pretty mediocre slasher with a lot stupid moments and barely passable acting. It's full of silly moments that only work in a comedy, but the editing tries for something darker and fails, leaving the overall tone in an ineffective middle ground.

What's really interesting about this movie is the fact that they use relatively young kids for this. Which is surprising given the foul language, sexual situations and violence both real and implied. Even though I saw the ending coming a mile away it's still pretty fucked up how it's presented and the demonic style it's given.

Top badass moment? Angela's 1,000 yard stare; it could blast a hole through a metre of Tungsten. OMG - Camp Arawak is a health & safety nightmare! Seriously, forget watching it as entertainment and just focus on all the safety, security, welfare and supervision issues. In comparison Camp Crystal Lake is more locked down than Colditz. And the standard of staffing... it was nearly as bad as the acting, shorts and men’s boob-tubes. A LGBTQ cinema non-classic. 1 decapitation, no cats or chainsaws.

This is an off-kilter movie that does its own thing, its amateurish quality acting as a feature rather than a hindrance. It's terrible and terribly awesome. It's so 80's I want to hug it. It also has a few surprises up its (very short) shorts. I've developed such an affection for this type of material that I no longer care if it's good in the traditional sense. While not one of the best slashers, it has a nice atmosphere and some pretty un-PC scenes that make you wonder what the filmmakers were thinking. For once the summer campers are young and the group dynamics are quite believable. The film is not really that scary but contains some effectively gory shots and that last shot will stay with you for a long time.

Maybe it is the extreme campiness. Maybe it is the ludicrous short shorts and short shirts. Maybe it is Ricky's mastery of cursing. Or maybe it is that final shot. Sleepaway Camp absolutely rips off a more famous slasher that calls camp home, but I find it vastly more entertaining.

Or: how a movie’s tone, impact and even relative quality can hinge on one final, awesome 30 second scene – while in dubious, regressive taste, it is hard to deny the genuinely horrific, chilling impact of “that scene”, combining Rose’s icy stare with Hiltzik’s off-kilter staging: as a technical set piece, it’s almost unequalled, and makes you wonder why Hiltzik was unable to get his irons out of the fire for the build-up, which plays as a sometimes campy but mostly dull FRIDAY THE 13TH rip-off.

Most of the people in this movie are horrible and annoying. But it's got those over-acted 80's slashes feels and I really love those, the whole messed-up summer camp with most of the kids acting like assholes and getting what's coming to them. Archery, boating and killing. These are some of the merit badges you can get at this camp. Sleepaway camp (the original) is pretty good, but not nearly as good as numbers 2 & 3. It didn't have as much horrible bullying as Return to Sleepaway camp, but it did have the bully motif. I really like the actor who played Angela. She had a perfect blank stare that would make you laugh and be uncomfortable at the same time...

Complete and utter garbage. The acting is atrocious, the dialog is horrendous, the cinematography is terrible and the death scenes are just so ludicrous you can't take them seriously. Even the make-up in the death scenes is absurd due to being obviously too gory for the deaths of the characters. The ending packs two twists: one you can see coming and one that is totally unexpected. Though, looking back, you can see how much influence this draws from Hitchcock's Psycho.

The acting is atrocious and the technical aspects are shoddy at best but it still makes for brisk, severely retarded entertainment. Despite the atrocious dialogue and acting this is still lauded as significant in the horror genre because of the big "shocking" reveal at the end. I wouldn't put it past this dense, daft, idiocracy bound society to be so uncomfortable with their own sexuality (especially a large portion of Americans: puritans in public, perverts in private) that this schlock is considered a seminal work.
