Holy shit this was bad. This may have the worst dialogue I've ever heard, and I don't mean just movies. This has worse dialogue than failed tv pilots, porno films, and the movies my friends and I made in high school. I hope everybody involved wraps their lips around the barrel of a shotgun and has toes that can fit in the trigger guard.

Dreadful artsy wank with seemingly little point. "Here's a nude young women, please give us a fortune to do everything but screw her". Yeah, except no. Also, where's the ending?

Highly underrated in my opinion. People complain of its extremely detached storytelling but I think that's the point of this terrific rebuke on the objectification of women. The coldly clinical and purposefully opaque approach enhances its oddly compelling deconstruction of sex with Emily Browning's hauntingly icy performance reflecting the character's inner turmoil beneath the surface of calm. One of the year's best films.

I have no idea what this film says; however directing is real interesting and captivating... some bed sequences are real disturbing, this movie is definitely not for everyone

Amazing film with an incredible performance by Emily Browning. Incredibly intriguing and leaves a lot of room for interpretation, the viewer will have to fill in the blanks and translate the symbolism, both are pretty frequent so expect an active, engaging watch! The pacing is excellent, I never felt bored during this film. I read some interesting analysis on this film on the IMDb boards, particularly concerning the ending, which helped me appreciate this film even more. Highly recommended!

Acting was all the way good and the directing boldly interesting. The idea of the plot was very haunting and intrigue. Cryptic. But the overstretched culmination monologue did not open. What was going on? What was the purpose of the story? The clue was missing. Was it one of those annoying artsy flicks?

Leigh uses a deliberate pace for the viewer to take the time to get into the surreal atmosphere. The technical aspects are marvelous to behold in this entrancing film. I don't really care if everybody else hated it by the way.

Sorry Julia Leigh, but no, being glacially paced, clinically detached, and having a lot of nudity does not mean you are automatically making a work of art.

Not too sure about using "erotic" to describe this film. There's a sense of death and ennui clinging throughout the film. It's clinical, devoid of fertility, and devoid of warmth. Some shots are pretty beautiful, the final scene is... interesting. But yeah, I don't get this film at all. It's art? Maybe. Or maybe it's just a disjointed, boring tale.

A different writer and director could have made a solid movie out of this. Emily Browning was well-cast, at least, and brave to take on this role. Many of her scenes were unsettling just to a viewer-- I can't imagine actually performing in some of those scenes. Otherwise, this movie misfired on all cylinders.

This movie is scary. Do I mean that it's filled with nasty scenes? Yes, the're nasty, but not the same way as in "Requiem for a dream." It's just a very, very beautiful representation of the swamps of the human mind. I should have probably given this movie a better grade - I do like subjective films. But I feel like it misses something. Maybe it's loud and clear to women. Most men won't enjoy it.

I was engaged by Sleeping Beauty. Is it for everyone? Not at all. If you like artsy films that are there for you to figure out instead of being told everything about them, then it might work for you. It has a solid performance from Emily Browning in the lead role, and it has enough imagery and symbolism to keep you coming back for another watch. That is, if you don't fall asleep the first time. I didn't have trouble staying awake, but I can definitely see how this isn't a film for everyone.

What could have been an intriguing tale simmered into a cold brew of thoughtlessness, much like the draught that secures Lucy's slumber. It seems that the role of Lucy is too complex for Browning to articulate. She seems too distant from the character, which doesn't help Leigh's incompetent direction, which seems more clueless than it is ambiguous. Perhaps Leigh would have been better off writing a novel, but even then that requires skill that can't be covered up with cinematic devices.

Very, very clinical so does not have a fairytale vibe at all. I don't think I liked it, because it was pretty boring, but I appreciate it. Its themes about objectification and the understated horror stuck with me afterward.

Starts as an offbeat examination of a young woman's struggle to make ends meet in the modern world, but soon loses its focus and just peters out. The more intellectual it tries to be the less it works, because we just aren't given enough of a grounding to go off from. Browning at least shows a willingness to throw herself out there into something different, and does quite well at it.

Strange and disturbing. I'd have to watch it again to really know what to make of it because I'm dumb and also got distracted by hawt nude Browning. I don't really know that I want to watch it again, though. But yeah, Browning was good and beautiful and it had some style and shocking scenes.

An incredibly flat film with almost no likeable characters and no emotional connection. I like that. Emily Browning gives a reserved and rather ballsy performance (and props to her for getting her kit off) amongst some quality little-known Australian actors, young and old. Unfortunately, this film's ending is unexpected and disappointing as it just ... ends. Maybe this film is a little too objective for it's own good.

The conceit of a woman that willfully drugs herself to sleep for money, and allows old farts to feel her up and have their way with her--sans penetration--is an intriguing set up for a film, and certainly fertile ground to raise questions about sex, power, gender, and the value of life and death, but it's ultimately superficial. The style has been compared to Breillat and Haneke, but it lacks the outrageous provocation of the former, and the tension and formal skills of the latter.

Doesn't understand its own abstractions or why it's employing them, other than it seems to want to be like a David Lynch movie. I just finished watching the new season of Twin Peaks so the comparison is extremely unflattering. By the way, why the fuck is Benita from Play School in this movie? That was unbelievably awkward.

It tries to tell a whole story by explaining nothing and letting the viewer take it in, but fails to create enough depth for this. Browning does a great job in a role that must be terrifying to play.

Everything in Julia's pointless and dull debut is so obtusely crafted -- from acting to directing, with shots that are hardly interested in Lucy's situation --, that is hard to feel anything for this girl. Some might say this director has a voice. Well, I if she does, then I can barely hear a thing. Artsy at its best.

It takes guts to make such a detached and alienating film, but I'm not sure what to make of it. It's highly eroticized, but sickeningly unromantic and undoubtedly pretentious. An interesting film to be sure, but something that either went over my head or just wasn't pushing my buttons.

it has the objectification of women and the sexual self-degradation of old men, but most everything outside the bedroom is dull, and ruined the dreamlike atmosphere that (should have) permeated the film. the ambient music on the title screen should have been utilised more. could have been far better, because the premise is fantastic. i hesitate to give it too low a score due to its ambition.

Not exactly Belle de Jour, but this debut by Australian director/screenwriter Julia Leigh is both artistic and entertaining. At least if you don't mind some pretentiousness and looking at (half) naked Emily Browning is something you would find entertaining. Story is on the level of those cheap books for 'sexually liberated' women. I really liked character of Birdman. A bit of a guilty pleasure, just like reading De Sade.

Detached, passionless mystery which is nevertheless dreamy and intriguing. The film is structured as a series of tableaux framed by a still camera which has a distancing effect so it never really strays into titillation. But I feel it could have been clearer about what it was trying to say.

Though Browning gives a great performance & gives her all in her role, it's not quite enough to save the cluttered script & story. Featuring several scenes that don't really connect or fit in with others, a very out of place monologue that breaks the fourth wall, many plot points that need more explaining than they ever get, & an awkwardly abrupt ending, it's a perfectly decent movie that never really becomes anything more. Worth a look if it sounds interesting, but nothing special in the end.

Really contradiction. It's not a spoon for every mouth. I'ts more of an artwork that will not capture your attention with interesting plot, but with the atmosphere and the feeling of helplessness and Lucy's blindness of the reality and maybe lack of any emotion till the very end, when the sleeping beauty wakes up and realize everything.

I feel bad being too critical of this, since Leigh clearly has the best of intentions and is aiming pretty high. That said, i'm not sure she has quite found a means of expressing her vision without resorting to some fairly clunky and obtuse art house pretensions. The Jane Campion production credit makes a lot of sense, as they share a lot of idiosyncrasies (and penchant for awkward symbolism), but unfortunately this lacks the singular brilliance of a film like Sweetie.
