(2014-15 Disneython #10:) I love how gratuitously evil Maleficent is just for the sake of evil. Scar, Jafar, and Ursula all wanted to rule their respective kingdoms, Gaston wanted to get laid, Cruella de Vil wanted a fur coat, hell, even Snow White's Queen wanted to be the fairest in the land. But Maleficent's entire motivation is "HEY FUCK YOU I'M EVIL" *curses your daughter* *spits in your soup* *kicks your dog* *gets your phone wet* *leaves the front door ajar*

The plot is thin and the songs don't do anything for me, but holy crap... the animation. This is among the most gorgeous animated films ever made, eschewing Disney's typically rounded style for something more angular, gothic, and expressionist.

It's pretty much like the people on the special features of the DVD (blatant plug) say: Sleeping Beauty is more like a symphony or painting than a film. You don't have to be emotionally invested to enjoy what you're seeing and hearing. It's probably Walt Disney's last testament to truly breathtaking animation.

A splendid villainess named Maleficent, with yellow eyes and black horns, and a splendid final fifteen minutes when the Three Good Fairies attempt to rescue Prince Phillip from Maleficent's stronghold on Forbidden Mountain. A tiny bit draggy to that point.

Another example of shallow soulless romance put in such a cute little animated package that people grow up with it and it turns them into cunts.

The third Disney Princess to join the bunch is kind of a strange melding of the first two. A similar "true love's kiss" story that feels like "Snow White" with a prince more like the one from "Cinderella" the movie feels like a refurbished tale. Although the amount of talking animal friends and songs were diminished, Disney makes up for it with more fairies. Despite Maleficent being a fantastic villain and the action climax being great the film feels constructed instead of classic Disney magic.

In this film Disney taught 19- and 16-year-olds to be adults, grow up and fight for love and what one believes in. Now they market High School Musical and Michael Bay films to the same age group. The animation is a revelation, and the themes do not try to pander to or insult its audience (Meet the Robinsons, I'm looking at you...)

Boring, but the animation is excellent. Way more style over substance. The climax with the prince and Maleficent is one of the best, though.

This movie features Maleficent, perhaps the coolest and most enjoyable of Disney Vilains. However it also features enough sidekicks, side characters and musical animals to fill two other movies. Subsequently, our main characters are as snubbed in characterization as the evil fairy was at the party, and pretty much every scene with them becomes a bore. The visuals on this movie, however, is perhaps my favorite amond the Disney features. The movie looks like perfect fairytale. Worth two viewings.

It's got its bad archaic bits (a 16-year old getting non-consensually kissed by and married to a guy who looks like he's 30, for one) and some sleepy ones too (the entire sequence in the forest) but the fairies' surprisingly strong role in the action climax as well as their comedic chemistry (shout out to the drunk bard too) help counter them. The excellent villain and underlying thread of dramatic irony in the dual identities of the "stranger" and the "peasant girl" are nice additions as well.

Safe to say I would have enjoyed this a lot as a little boy had I seen it when it came out. I can also safely say that I enjoyed it a lot as an adult. This was such a great time. Yeah, some of the characters are thinly written, and Aurora isn’t the best part of the movie, but she’s likable enough, the Prince is actually memorable and badass, and Maleficent is one of the best Disney villains ever. The last act was unexpected and awesome. The animation, humor and story still hold up!

Probably some of the slickest and stylized animation to ever come out of Disney- even when the story fails to engage it's always a pleasure to watch. Seriously, those backgrounds! On the character side, we have the deliciously evil Maleficent and the three good fairies to contrast with an otherwise terribly bland ''heroine' and 'hero' whose failure to engage us emotionally is probably the film's biggest drawback.

Though "Sleeping Beauty's" leads are far from the most engaging characters, its supporting cast--including Maleficent, one of Disney's finest villains--is great, and words cannot express the beauty behind the flawless art direction and Tchaikovsky influenced music.

Sleeping Beauty is one of Disney's richest works of artwork and animation, with a distinctively sharp, geometric illustrative style resembling that of glass art and tapestries. Despite its stunning appearances, even by Disney standards the story is too traditional and can't be saved its very light charms and their starkest villain yet. This return to form was deliberate, but in terms of writing this goes further back than Snow White. Only highly recommended for particular fans of animation.

I watched this for the first time just before its 60th anniversary. I dig Maleficent as a villain. She didn't get invited to a party, so she shows up anyway and puts a 16-year-delayed curse on this baby. Would have been a much better idea to invite her, because there's no way she'd go to your dumb-ass baby shower in the first place.

Though it's packed full of signature Disney charm and absolutely has enjoyable moments, it also suffers from an incredibly rushed finale and an instant romance that in hindsight is more comical than heartwarming. The highlights include Maleficent, the fairies, and the banter between the two kings. All in all, it still stands as an iconic movie and is well worth watching if you've never seen it before- especially given that it's a very quick ride- but is far from the best Disney flick out there.

The animation is impressive, but the story isn't that interesting. It's a simple fairy tale told in a straightforward way. While it showcases great technical sophistication, it lacks the imagination and heart of Disney's best prime period work, and there are too many dull patches for such a short film. On the plus side, Maleficent is a great villain, and she is superbly voiced by Audley, and the climatic battle between her and the prince is a show stopping set piece.

One of Disney's most visually rich and colorful films, saturated with the amazing Eyvynd Earle's art direction and background paintings. Visually captivating, with very defined and well-developed characters, and one of the best Disney villains ever done! Some good laughs, some nice songs and appealing characters. While it's far from being Disney's best picture, it may be his best LOOKING one, just packed end to end with GORGEOUS design and color work oozing out of every damn frame. My goodness -- the backgrounds, the character design; it's really just masterful. The climactic scenes get my vote for the best fantasy action ever put on film, bar none. Not Disney's first widescreen picture either, but one that shows how the Disney artists mastered the medium.

Truly a Disney classic! Full of joy and heart and lovable characters and warm animation. I'd forgotten how large of roles the three good fairies had! They are so delightful! Sleeping Beauty has always been one of my least favorite of the classic Disney films. Yeah the animation and music is fantastic, but the story seems like nearly a complete rehash of the much much better Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Didn't really care for this - the story is a classic one and still manages to be dull and stale most of the time, with characters that are either annoying and/or two-dimentional, one of the lamest villains I've ever seen and a love story that's cheesy and dull all at once. A few great scenes, such as "Once Upon a Dream" & some darker scenes later on can't save it when things like the "sword of truth" and "shield of virtue" form the topping upon this cheesecake. Fair enough, but not Disney magic.

I saw the restored version on dvd, and while it looks good, I must say that there's too much filler in the film. The story probably could be told in half the time, but we have some extended scenes--with music (that aren't that great) or details--that aren't that critical to the story. I'm pretty sure I liked this when I saw this as a child, but I don't think it's a great film.

Sleeping Beauty is every bit as magical as Disney gets. The backgrounds and the feelings they convey are one of this movie's strongest points. It has great music from Tchaikovsky, and it features Disney's most badass yet classy villain. However, this movie is more about the agreeable fairies than Aurora herself, a step backwards for Disney, being even more passive than Cinderella or Snow White. But even though the main characters are weak, and the story a bit uneven, it's pure Disney magic.

I didn't mind Aurora sleeping for half of the film. Been years since I saw this, but I do remember loving it a great deal. What I remember was having a magical feeling while watching it. If I remembered correctly, the climax played greatly between the gloomy situations with the light of magic brightening the way towards something positive. Dem colors though, for their time... quite bright.
