Yeah, shut up, I like this. Probably because when I was a kid I had a crush on Meg Ryan, but it's still a pretty good romantic comedy. And dude, the cinematographer is Sven Nykvist. Yeah, the guy who did all of Bergman's movies, plus Crimes and Misdemeanors. So I can justify it. Yeah. Fuck you.

An endearing film. It's in the pantheon of chick flicks for a reason. Ephron knows when to aim specs of dust at the audience's eye level and when to go for laughs. And the script is smart about poking fun at the subgenre (and the suckers who buy into the magic these movies sell) while simultaneously navigating the familiar territory on which people are longing to connect with their soulmates in serendipitous romances. It's sweet and sort of irresistible. Like Reese's. You see Rosie? I do get it.

This film holds the record for most times a character says the title. Tom Hanks plays what every woman desires -- a widower with a young child. Both Hanks and Ryan have partners that seem way too good for them. Meg Ryan's fiancee has allergies, and seems way too chill that she is not only leaving him, but running to meet Hanks that moment.

If this same situation was happening in real life right now Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan would never meet because stupid TSA would have kept Jonah off that plane. Then Tom Hanks would have settled for the dreaded Victoria and a wedge would have been driven between father and son. A rift that wouldn't be closed until e-mail became a thing 5 years later and Tom Hanks cheated on Victoria in a saucy e-mail relationship with Meg Ryan that he wouldn't know was Meg Ryan until later.

The beautiful opening shot starts things off well, and the way the movie tenderly teases the inevitable coupling right up until the sweet final scene and line ("It's nice to meet you") is to be lauded too, but a lot of the stuff IB (in between) is WTF (what the fuck), like Acronym Jessica, Annoying Jonah, Allergic-thus-Unattractive-Walter, and that one painful scene that's just a 5 minute long movie recap followed by a woman's husband and brother making fun of her for having emotions?? Wut?

Not many rom-coms would dare to keep their central couple apart for the entire film (you can literally count the exchanged sentences on your fingers!), probably because that is a ridiculous idea which this film only barely pulls off due to its immensely talented cast and director.

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have done several films together and they always have such wonderful chemistry. While I found You've got Mail a better movie, this flick is a wonderful romantic comedy. Sure guys, it's a chick flick, but it's one we can enjoy too.

This film is a combination of every romantic comedy cliche in the book. That makes it watchable and at times enjoyable because it's safe and sappy and leaves you warm inside, but it's also frustrating and annoying because every character outside the two leads is a paper thin cutout who only serves to further the inevitable romance and is easily discarded.

Funny movie with a lot of heart (not just in the romance department, but more in the relationships between Tom Hanks with his son and deceased wife.) It's funny that this has become the go-to example of a romantic comedy, when it's so structurally different from most.

Very watchable Old-fashioned classic love story. Tom Hanks manages to elicit tears simply by talking on the phone. Meg Ryan as adorable as ever. Side characters not completely pointless. I refuse to diminish this movie still simply because it's become a cliche at this point, as this movie itself references prior cliches and An Affair to Remember.
