Episodic and slightly sitcommy but achieves a cohesiveness through a kinda daring anti-growth (not to say regression) true to the characters and their relationships. Helped by a very likable cast and a fair amount of laughs. Love Corrigan as an oddly endearing dealer in a Manson tee, Krumholtz aping Dad to con him outta weed. One late moment might jar, but seems a culmination of the undercurrents of sadness and desperation, and true to how such things are often handled, for better or worse.

I like it. Natasha Lyonne is so interesting that I wondered why she never got big. The plot doesn't go far and I don't really get the moral at the end, except the dad's storyline got wrapped up well (except groping his niece, eww). Fav scene: Arkin yelling at Corrigan and Corrigan rolling with the punches and following along.

I like coming of age stories for women because there aren't nearly enough of them.

Was it bad? No. Was it good? No. Things happened but they weren't really all that relevant to anything. The movie was by no means unenjoyable, but at the same time it was never really funny. On the plus side the casting and acting was really good, but there was no point as everything ended up the way it started. They nailed the look of the 70's, but what purpose did the setting really have on anything? I really don't know. I'm just left confused about what this film was trying to accomplish.

Nice little film, if a little unfocused. Treads a fine line with over the top wantonness out of the good taste's ballpark or just plain silliness, but still at times manages to be genuinely funny. Natasha Lyonne's sizzling hotness in this is undeniable.

This should've been funnier, with Jenkins at the helm and such talented cast. But it's not.

A rather simplistic comedy in the coming-of-age vein that runs by the numbers, never taking any substantial risks. It's most salient feature is the Abramowitz's conscious attempt to assimilate into a higher class, to taste some of the finer things, but also sacrifice certain comforts in order to benefit the family as a whole. Class never takes center stage however; the main theme seems to be the importance of familial relationships, bonding the nuclear family unit into an inseparable whole.

Almost a good movie. Watchable enough coming of age story. Arkin is great.

Not sure why Natasha Lyonne is so stunning in this, but she is and Arkin has never been funnier.

The acting is uniformly excellent, & Natasha cute as a button. The situations are a bit extreme & depressing, but provide many opportunities for big laughs and lots of people running around in their underwear. The handling of various subjects seems about right, but the shots maintain a prudishness enforcing the notion that bodies are still disgusting no matter how natural.

Natasha Lyonne's cleavage is reason enough to watch this funny movie

An amusing story peaks too early and falls flat with a disappointing climax and boring denouement. Lines delivered with a great (hopefully) intentional deadpan make for a few good laughs, but not much else.

This is a good film to watch along with "Little Miss Sunshine". Both of these films teach different yet extremely vital points of community and family.
