This film was a pleasant surprise. I didn't know it existed. Often films involving TV comedy actors can be quite poor, but I enjoyed Matt Lucas' (and the other) character(s). The plot is bizarre and the characters equally weird. The film is a dark comedy with an uplifting ending. I was interested all the way through. I can understand this won't be everyone's cup of tea, and imagine some or most will find this uneventful and boring, but I liked it.

I Just didn't love this. Matt Lucas did a pretty good job considering his part was pretty crazy. This is the biggest role I've seen him do and I felt like her honored the part well. I just didn't understand this movie at all. It felt like it never went anywhere. I also felt like some strange morals to the story were slipped into this. I was really in awe at how many big actors played such small roles in this. Even more strange was Dolph Lundgren and Johnny Knoxville being in the same film.

It's one of those contrived eccentric movies where everything feels a pre-calculated amount of weird. Some of the characters worked well, like Billy Crystal's earnest detective, and Peter Stormare's psychotic landlord. Others felt unnecessary. Matt Lucas didn't do a bad job himself, but his character was never portrayed in a sympathetic enough light to be accepted as a hero to root for. The film can be lauded for originality but in truth many of its settings, jokes and events were hit-or-miss.

What happened to that demented flashy-colored tragicomedy I was watching? Why did it turn sappy all of a sudden? Switzerlaaaaaaand.

Small Apartments is an odd little film, about forgiveness and moving on, although from a slightly skewed perspective. Darkly funny while simultaneously sappy, the film's tone is juxtaposed against bright colours and an semi-upbeat score. Lucas shows he has range as does Knoxville, and the film is wrapped up quite nicely. I'm unsure if I would recommend this film to anyone, but I'm glad that I saw it. Keep thinking about this one, so I'm raising the rating.

It could have been so much more, and there are some moments in there that made the trailer look very promising, but somehow it failed to really deliver

Quirky and nicely-made, but the story is very lopsided, leaving most of the characters out in the cold.

It really stalls out in the back half, with some random emotional stuff, but the first thirty minutes were so dark and dry and hilarious i was crying from laughter. The cast is a ridiculous mix in the best way. Lucas does a good job as the creepy lead, caan spouts nastiness so well i giggled at almost all his lines, crystals world weariness goes over great, and knoxville surprisingly gets the only emotional moments that work. I recommend it for the opening act and the eclectic cast.
