Small Crimes

A dirty ex-cop gets out of jail and tries to avoid the shitstorm of crime that put him there in the first place. The Macon Blair script has plenty of grit and bleak scenes, but falls pretty flat in the romance department. I can't recall a film in which the lead and the love interest have so little chemistry while exchanging their stilted dialog. In the end, this flick mostly serves as a reminder that Robert Forster is not a dude to be fucked with, and that makes it worth a watch in my book.

What a wild ride to a heavy-handed ending. I disliked some of the story progression and in particular the final scenes. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau's portrayal of a dirty cop ex-con wanting to reform was pretty decent and believable. Molly Parker was underutilized, and I hated how they handled her at the end. The love story was very weak. This movie is not particularly clever or very memorable but entertaining and worth a watch. In the end, I guess he got was he deserved. Karma can be a bitch.

Underrated film. Definitely worth a viewing. Capable directing by Katz, solid script and good acting throughout. Check it out.

Small Crimes is a crime caper full of quirky characters and darkly comic moments. The conclusion is jet black. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau does a good job as ex-con Joe.

Given the filmmaker and Macon Blair, I expected a conclusion full of chaos. While this assumption didn't disappoint, everything leading up to this is bleak and unnecessarily confusing.

Moderately entertaining dark past felon type tale. The acting is good, there just isn't much connection to any character and it feels like well worn territory.

Small Crimes is an unenjoyable movie about a former police officer trying to move on from his past, even though his past isn't quite ready to move on from him. It's bleak, emotionally vapid, slow-moving, and ultimately unsatisfying. It's well-acted, has a lot of interesting supporting characters - around whom a better movie could have been based - and does atmosphere well, but it's just not emotionally or intellectually engaging, and it lacks when it comes to pure entertainment, too.
