When you're a kid, this is awesome because it's cool toys blowing shit up. But it's actually pretty good satire.

So...the people who own the rights to Barbie thought they shouldn't let her be in Toy Story, where she'd have most likely been treated with dignity and respect, but gave Small Soldiers, a movie that sees them stripped and brainwashed into psycho slaves, the thumbs up?!?!

Tries to be too many things at once and ends up in a weird gulf between being a kid's film and an adult-oriented film. That's too bad, as once things get going it actually becomes pretty entertaining. It manages to find a grove that lets you worry less about the poor writing and acting, and it has a nice cynical satirical bent to it. Could have been great in the right hands.

This one's fascinating. Toy Story with an edge and social commentary. It's not as endearing as Toy Story is, of course, but Toy Story doesn't have the brilliant Phil Hartman stating, "I think World War II was my favorite war" or Kirsten Dunst gleefully crushing action figures with a lawnmower.

Oh, finally a movie that I found better than a majority of Criticker crowd! What was surprising for me, that this is not a kids' movie. It's kind of lost between serious and juvenile themes. Kids wouldn't understand commentary on capitalism and warmongering. Adults probably don't bother to look past toy soldiers. It's quite awesome film, really.

Joe Dante rehashes his winning Gremlins formula 14 years on, replacing murderous monsters with homicidal action figures. It hits most of the same beats but eschews the twisted, sadistic tone in favour of something more family friendly, which strips it of any real menace. It's a fun kids' film nonetheless, and the voice talent assembled is glorious.

I was surprised to find it somewhat enjoyable; it got lost among the countless other computer-animated offerings at the time. Jonathan Rosenbaum also has an insanely high-brow interpretation at the Chicago Reader website; I wouldn't go that far but the film has a cleverness to it.

Tons of good ideas here in Dante’s reimagining of GREMLINS through TOY STORY sensibilities, but the film has an awkward, uneven tone which lacks the true go-for-broke of the former, and the charm and whimsy of the latter, settling on a middle ground which never truly satisfies. Oddball but effective casting of THE DIRTY DOZEN as our pro/antagonists is great, and highlighted by a hilariously ghoulish deployment of Barbie dolls (feeling like the element that reaches the tone Dante was aiming for).

Admirable for its fun concept (which was commercial savvy, as me and my friends bought the toys back in the day) that sometimes makes the most out of itself. But it also often falls in the usual family film problems, like the children characters speaking like adults (and vice versa), the lead kid leaves no impression, and it's not as humorous as it wants to be. Like Space Jam, an interesting oddity of a kids' film from my childhood years.

I have fond memories of watching this as a kid and it's a decent, if implausible and goofy, premise. Unfortunately the execution leaves something to be desired. With a good script rewrite this could be a fun, campy movie. As it is it remains mildly entertaining.

I had a vague memory in the back of my head of this as a generic anti-violent-toys movie, but the truth is weirder and way more interesting. Joe Dante started off making a Gremlins-esque dark adventure for teens and was forced to pivot to something more small-child-focused, and the result is a fascinating and pointed satire with a lot of good humor and action that probably doesn't quite work for either audience but is really fun for a weird movie-analyzing adult. Toy Story with explosions!

Advocates like Rosenbaum view Small Soldiers' toyetic surface as Dante's sly commentary on cultural violence and the commodification of war, but it's really a silly kids film that's thoroughly mediocre and exactly the kind of major studio pap that was sold to children after the phenomenonal success of Toy Story. Perhaps his intentions were obscured when the darker elements were removed by third parties? Nonetheless, it's a rather forgettable film that was a bad sign of things to come for Dante.

Not as amazing as it was when I was a kid, obviously, but it's not terrible either. Everytime the Commandos and Gorgonites, specifically the latter, are on screen the movie is surprisingly charming and entertaining, with TLJ slinging endless puns and references. As expected, all the human characters suck and drag the film down. All soundtracks should include Communication Breakdown. The Cannon Fodder Gwendy's were hilarious.

I loved this as a kid and I think it's actually held up quite well. It's very cynical - it seems Joe Dante wanted to take on the big corporate enemy, much as it is in the Terminator films, but instead subverts it by essentially arguing that consumerism is an unstoppable force - and that essentially everyone can be paid off. Between this there is a fairly stock plot about young kids fighting a big bad, etc - which is serviceable. But it's really about the dark humour, and great cast.

Once upon a time the CGI had to have a good reason to be used. Toy story was the first commercial creation to realize the hyper realism potential that lies in 3D. Small soldiers follows it's footsteps, and this time it isn't childsplay. Small soldiers is a violent movie with a violent premise, albeit being full of anti-war propaganda, it actually claims that sometimes the only way to deal with violence is being violent.

2018 Rewatch: Man Joe Dante really hates corporate america, yuppies, hippies and he isn't the least bit subtle. Which is, of course, why I love this movie to pieces. 2007: Underrated little action flick with inspired voice-actor stunt casting. The child lead isn't the precocious, perfect son that usually stars in these kinds of things, either.

This movie was unexpectedly funny to watch. First I was sceptical because of the shallow story of toys turning alive and good vs. bad toys and kids turning good - and in the end it was this set-up that reduced the fun. However, the movie also comes up with lots of quotes and references that just made me laugh and wait for more. All in all: good start, relatively weak end - the last 20 minutes just aren't that necessary at all.

Almost a little too cliché. Plot and dialogue, I mean. Direction was pretty cool. As were the animatronics/animations. I mean, it's obvious not much thought went into some kind of mythology or whatever and for it to be actually trashy it still tries too much to be somewhat realistic. Which, in the end, just makes it a little cheap, but it's still kinda fun.

Small Soldiers Joe Dante seemingly ripping off his own work. The film is nothing more than Gremlins meets Toy Story. And as a selling gimmick, it works just fine. The practical effects work well enough. It's a shame the CGI effects don't hold up as well. Kirsten Dunst gives a decent performance and the late great Phil Hartman is always joyful to watch.

Here's one of those hidden gems of our childhood. The dark Toy Story, if you will. This movie is so strange, because it's both memorable and forgettable at the same time. Memorable in those Gorgonite and Soldier toys, but forgettable in its story, which isn't specific or deep enough for the audience to care that much about

Clearly what happened here is the Zionist media got a hold of this political satire about the consequences of a comically bloated military industrial complex and watered the message down with fart jokes so only the most mindless of children would enjoy it. Yeah, I'm sure thats what happened. At least it's better than the jingoist fodder the post-9/11 world has delivered. (abridged review: dumb, dumb movie)
