Smilla's Sense of Snow

1997
Drama, Suspense/Thriller

Based on Peter Hoeg's bestseller, this film is set in snowy Copenhagen where a small boy is found dead after he fell off a roof. Smilla Jasperson, a close friend who lives in the same house begins to suspect murder because she knows that the boy was afraid of heights and would not have played on the roof. As she begins to investigate, she is pulled deeper and deeper into a conspiracy that could very well mean her death. (imdb)

Oddly underplayed for a movie involving meteor strikes, evil conspiracies and murder mystery... Understandably messy for a movie involving meteor strikes, evil conspiracies and murder mystery...

Passably entertaining, or maybe just appealingly obscure, Scandi crime forerunner. Refreshingly few characters for this kind of story. Gets rather silly, a little too James Bond, late in the game. Strong photography is evident despite the poor quality of my DVD copy. The many glowing reviews of the novel suggest a more serious, heartfelt, pointed work than this film.

No suspense or thrills despite being a suspense/thriller, precious little action, confusing mystery and a lot of babbling about god knows what

Smilla is a badass and the sound it makes when people walk in winter jackets is hilarious.

Its fascinating sense of place and atmosphere, its subtly distinctive characterizations, and August's mastery of mood, tone and understatement compensate for the fact that nothing in the final half hour can be taken seriously, especially since---as a suspense thriller made in the 1990s---that simply comes with the territory.

It's nice to see this as sort of a precursor to the now glowingly succesfull nordic noir, and I can't help but state that I am pretty much in love with the mood in this one, but I thought the ending just lacked the punch I felt like we were building up to. And no it's not because the plot took a turn for the weird - I actually really liked that.

Saved only by a very nice performance from Ormond. A shame as there is a very talented supporting cast.

Only Julia Ormond's performance made this movie watchable, the story and plot development are very close to bad. At times it is really boring.

I really like Julia Ormond's Smilla, and the film started off promising, but the ending was bad.
