A meandering (in the best sense of that word) walk through the lives of five people in and around NYC. Wang allows these relationships to develop, makes liberal use of his characters' story-telling abilities, and includes an underlying tone of optimism that really makes this film endearing. While we all have broken relationships and other heartaches in our past (or present), there's always hope that our doing the "little things" for others will be the conduit to putting life back together.

Some good Paul Auster moments, but it was a bit too much like a play, and who wants to see a play? Not I.

Not great--especially in terms of the "story;" really, this is more of a character-driven film--with the various "stories" (or semblence thereof) revolving around a few characters. If this appeals to you, then I'd recommend this. Blue in the Face has even less of a narrative, and seems to be more about Brooklyn--which makes that film work better.

Not a whole lot in the way of story, but Keitel and Hurt carry the film. They're both mind-numbingly good. Great atmosphere, too.

Hurt and Keitel are superb. I feel like this film captured the dying moments of the old New York.

Just a nice character driven sorta feelgood movie about people making the lives of others a bit better, with a disarmingly sweet Hurt and a great Keitel. Not much in the way of story, but it's nice just to follow the lives of these people for a while. Also I guess I should start smoking.

for anyone specifically looking for something humorous to watch, note that while there are times of light-heartedness, I wouldn't really call this a comedy.

Smoke is an overlooked and underrated gem from Wayne Wang. It's a conversation film centering on a smoke/convenience shop in New York and the people whose lives run through it. Some may find the storytelling style dry and boring, but for fans of conversation driven filmmaking, Smoke is a great find.

An enjoyable neat little organised mess, driven more by characters and situations than a concrete plot. It has a lightheartedness to it that feels almost like a Seinfeld episode, but longer and more real. Makes me nostalgic for a simpler time, even if the setting is modern enough. The writing and dialogue is especially good, it feels like real care went into creating these characters. Nice job by all involved.

Decent 'writerly' cinema. Suffice to say, its cinematic virtues are rather scant, but Auster's characters are well defined and given sufficient life by the actors, especially Keitel and Hurt, who do fine work in understated roles. Its meandering narrative is deceptive though; it's rather conventional in terms of its 'message' and how it all plays out, despite its surface noise, which makes it a rather typical middlebrow Miramax post-Pulp Fiction product.

A low-key meander through largely uneventful lives is made special by Wang & Auster’s close, specific observations of their characters and milieu, and fine, understated performances all round (with Keitel and Hurt’s wonderful buddy act standing out). Low-impact but quite resonant – ironically the narrative contrivances employed to add some “spice” don’t work as well as they could; Keitel’s powerful climactic monologue stands on its own, and I’m not sure the re-enactment was entirely necessary.

The director would really like you to know he has famous friends. Keitel carries the movie as he is wont to, but there’s really not that much here to carry.

I couldn't watch this in 3 sittings. It started strong the first half, but the dialogue-centered film could not hold my interest at all the second half. The few plot surprises were over the top and didn't mesh with the rather basic dialogues. Hurt and Keitel try to be poets the entire movie and it certainly feels forced.

I lost interest about 3/4's of the way through this pointless family drama stage play.
