a wonderful story that crosses so much time and space it's hard to fathom, i have to admit i'm a sucker for these kinds of movies though.

Overlong, episodic survival tale tells an interesting, apparently true (or true-ish) story, but can't overcome the feeling that these story elements have been told better (and more succinctly) in other films; Bettermann is effectively stoic as the escapee, but Kotenyov's sinister pursuing Lieutenant is developed hazily, which means there is never much fire and urgency once Bettermann goes on the run. At its best in the first act, detailing the hellish POW conditions.
