Some may describe this video work for Channel 4 exceptionally pretentious, a cross between home video and musings on film and TV, but compared to Godard's more acclaimed work, I found this far more concise, coherent and intellectually potent despite its flaws. His partner and co-director Mieville helps in this greatly, turning the final quarter into a critique of his own work. Also, maybe perversely, I could watch scenes of Godard swinging around a tennis racket all day in a short by itself.

Godard's boring, self-indulgent, pretentious nadir among 50-or-so masterpieces--and Mieville, another highly artful, talented director, truly fails here.

Through his films, Godard expounds film theory, political philosophy, and seeks to be a vital voice at the cutting edge of culture. When it comes to the latter, he's a product of his time and garbles everything, leaving me to appreciate the good sense of Mieville (which is self-consciously foregrounded, it seems, as antidote to JLG's flights of whimsy).
