What is this, an excellent version of Passengers? I prefer the original but that's because "Ow." Sorry, my combat boots are a little tight. Anyways, Soderbergh vs Tarkovsky isn't even a "Ooh!" Snagged my skinny jeans on a nail. Like I was saying though, the book by Stanislaw Lem really merits "Yikes!" My beard got caught in one of my ear gauges.

The film snobs think it's not as good as Tarkovsky's version and the general public finds it boring. But Solaris simply works for me. Not too fast, not too slow, not too short, not too long. Nice photography. Good performances. A solid, intriguing sci-fi premise that leaves something to the imagination. And a really wonderful score on top of everything else. It just fits me in some way, and besides Davies, I have no complaints.

a lost lamb reaches for god and finds only mutable fragments of his own consciousness; how can there be identity, connection or meaning when the memories they're built on are slippery and self-serving? strange to say about a forgotten alt-adaptation, but this was something of a formative film for me in how it takes something vast and makes it personal, intimate, a drunken melancholy midnight dialogue to have with your screen and earphones. wish SS still made films that look and sound this good.

Like his 2001: A Space Odyssey re-edit, Soderbergh's remake shows nerdy fanboys that great sci-fi re-imaging can be concise and thoughtful instead of just long shots of futuristic architecture. Cinematically, he uses some neat montages, cool special fx, and trippy music to create a lived-in world. And Jeremie Davies is amazing. However, I thought actors other than Clooney and Viola Davis (who is too off-putting to be a good Spock) would make the film better. Still, it's pop philosophy done well.

I haven't seen the original as of writing this review but I absolutely loved this film. If the original is better then I can't wait to see it. George Clooney is fantastic in this and everyone else is quite good as well. The soundtrack is phenomenal, even the Insane Clown Posse song actually fits (I can't believe I just said something positive about ICP). A great surreal science fiction film.

Underrated. Significantly different from Tarkovsky's version, in fact in some ways in stark opposition in that it is very accessible and more easily digestible. This means that we lose some of Lem's brilliant thoughts but it doesn't render Soderbergh's take less palatable. It's been a long time since I've seen 'Traffic' but I'm tempted to call 'Solaris' his best effort.

This film has a beautiful visual style, wonderful music and excellent acting. The Sci-fi setting is really only a means to an end with the film's real core a believably bittersweet romance. I found the ending to be very satisfying, once I pieced an interpretation together. Certainly makes me want to see the original.

compared to the original, this is more tightly knit and stream-lined. it cuts out all the excess crap from the original, and leaves you with the truly awesome story of solaris (it does however cut out tarkovskys trade-mark carmera work, but for the sake of saving an hour i can live with it)

People like to pick on this one for not being as ambitious as Tarkovsky's, but I like to look at the two as separate movies stemming from a similar concept. This Solaris happens to be a lot more personal than Tarkovsky's, and, while it wouldn't work for his, it did here. The soft music and the lovely visuals make this a visually lush movie, and Natascha McElhone and George Clooney give good performances. It qualifies as both a good Sci-Fi movie and a good romantic one, and I like it for that.

(second viewing) I'm sticking with my previous score. Its sophomoric premise and story will always leave me indifferent (check my review for the original for more on that). This film will raise a lot of questions and provoke even more wrong, frivolous and ambiguous answers (thought-provoking, right ?!). Just as the original, an overrated mess.

Let it be noted that I've not seen the original and it's from the sounds of it better, though I wouldn't know about that. In any case, this is a brilliant film. It feels like something of a cross between 2001: A Space Odyssey and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, yet it at the same time feels completely different from anything I've ever seen. You get the feeling throughout that even though it's interesting and compelling there's something missing, but in the end it all pays off.

I saw this as profoundly anti-romantic. Purple Rose of Cairo if the protagonist chooses to live in a fantasyworld at the end, relating only to himself via delusion and solipsistic wish-fulfilment. Showed it to my partner yesterday, and boy did she not agree.

Movie pales in comparisons, big-time, to the book. And the book wasn't that great, in my mind. It was GOOD, and Stanislaw Lem is a great writer of the genre, just didn't click for me. And the film didn't do the book any favors.

Wonderfully atmospheric and very well made, this is a gem of a sci-fi. Clooney is nothing short of brilliant and the support cast also back him up pretty well. The supurb soundtrack only adds to the unusual and creepy feeling this movie creates as Soderbergh puts his own spin on the also excellent 1972 original. A generally excellent balance of the surreal and existential, this is an expertly paced piece of high-concept short story sci-fi. Underrated.

This second interpretation of Solaris is a failure but an admirable one. It does suffer from a single character, whose reinterpretation as being spaced out in his acting feels out of place in such a serious film, and while Soderbergh nearly succeeds in making the film half the length of Andrei Tarkovsky's, it really needed to be restructured slightly. Nonetheless, its one of the few Soderbergh films of real merit for me, with a fleshed out emotional core that is fitting for the film's ideas.

It has much better pacing than the original, but I think it loses a bit of Tarkovsky's flair for subtlety and transcendence; I didn't really feel the same punch at the end. However, it is still an enjoyable, meditative sci-fi.

Characterisation is about the worst I've ever seen. Soderbergh said it would be closer to the novel, but it's just a shit rip off of Tarkovsky's film. He borrows his ending as though it was meant to be generic ambiguity. There's no dissonance of the psyche or introspection, just a mindless pursuit of love at all costs. The exposition is forced, pacing is nonexistent, score is boring etc. Oh, and Solaris itself looks like one of those big plasma ball lamps everyone had as a kid.

Way too much emphasis on the love story makes it a rather dull and plodding movie. The visuals and effects are well done, just couldn't find any chemistry between the leads which is essential for what they were going after. I shall seek out and watch the original someday.

There is obviously no way Soderbergh's version would come anywhere close to Tarkovsky's, but I still appreciated the effort in terms of pacing and photography. As a Hollywood product, it also remains a highly watered-down version with rehashed tropes but it's still one of the only movies by Soderbergh I actually enjoyed.

I went into this without knowing what it's about. All I saw is space and went yeah, I want to see more space stuff. It turned out to be very slow psychological thriller and while it's not bad, it is just slow. I really enjoy the debate on what makes a person a person and do we have the right to say what can exist or not, but I feel like even without seeing the original (or having read the book), it just must have done it better.

It is a little pretentious for Soderbergh to think he has the talent to remake a Tarkovsky film, but I have to say that I actually liked this movie. This is one of the most hated movies I've come across because on one hand you've got the film purists who cry foul and the casuals who think it's maudlin and boring. I fall in the middle and found it to be a worthwhile depiction of the classic and a far more accessible version of the story. I highly recommend this.

An excellent existential/nihilstic examination of humanity and life in general. This was far more thought provoking than I ever imagined it was going to be. This has given me the incentive to look out the original and the book (neither seen nor read). Well worth a look and people shouldn't be put of by the Sci-Fi tag, as this film doesn't need to be pigeon-holed into that genre. Clooney was excellent (as he almost always is), and I think that Davies was almost perfect in his role.

I liked this almost as much as the original. It's more accessible and emotional, and contains less narrative fat. What it lacks is Tarkovsky's poetic eye and willingness to dwell on ideas at great length. It's a decent trade-off --taken together, the two films compliment each other very well. I prefer the ending to the original, Soderbergh's is a bit too Sixth Senseish for me (the space station as a purgatory for the dead to lay their life's demons to rest before proceeding to the afterworld).
