It has become something of a Dutch war classic, and although it begins with the mess of the free followed by the envoloping mess of Nazism, on the whole the movie itself is a bit messy. Not particularly brilliant, but some scenes are well done and tackle angles of desperation, torture and humanity during war that other films don't tend to touch to such an extent.

Exactly the opposite of what the opening credits on the Dutch flag and the score imply : Verhoeven shows the Dutch resistance movement members as amateur, unprepared, tractable, gullible, cheating on each other, useless idiots. There's absolutely no heroism whatsoever and only the luckiest will survive. Verhoeven will go even further with Black Book.

A good, and comprehensive, Dutch addition to the war movie canon which provides some respectable basic suspense but, in my opinion, never the superbness promised by the Newsweek quote on the American posters.

The moments where Verhoeven develops a critical tone are the strongest. Where he falls most unironically into conventional war storytelling is where he becomes less interesting.

This is the first PV movie I've seen, crazy huh. Well this is a totally fine movie, I enjoyed it and the production value is good, but man does it trot out every trope and lay the music on thick. I'm not as much of an elitist as some, but there's no need to drop what you are doing and catch this. BTW this is the first movie I've discovered and watched solely because I was tooling around on Criticker.

Surprisingly conventional storytelling from Verhoeven. It never loses momentum and there's some good acting, but otherwise not very interesting.

Surprisingly not exciting or outrageous considering the subject matter and Verhoeven's rep

Another great movie from Verhoeven but he wasn't letting himself off his leash just yet. By itself, it's a fascinating World War II mini-epic but too much bullshit "respectability" considering what Verhoeven would show he was capable of.

SOLDAAT VAN ORANJE. Must see for every dutch person. Great, if not best, Rutger Hauer movie.

Well-paced and you always want to see what happens next, but the war scenes are ordinary and the stylistic emphasis on the body (either physical punishment or the naked form) comes across as leering and sadistic. The friendships that should form the crux of the story are barely touched on (especially with Alex).

In the end, Soldaat van Oranje is simply another war movie. A few exciting/unsettling scenes mixed with a lot of things we've seen before many times. For Dutch standards it's pretty grand in scale. Too bad some elements are rushed ("Oh I guess the country got liberated in-between scenes") and it's a bit uneven all-over.

paul verhoeven, rutger hauer and jeroen krabbe in a movie that is very much one that depicts the second world war as a young boys book. Not that it's a bad movie, but if it were to be released today it wouldn't be as highly praised because of it.

The story has potential and Verhoeven's approach has its upsides, but nothing really impresses in the realization.

Verhoeven's memorial to the Dutch resistance movement in World War II -- a big, sloppy, tasteless blockbuster. The director's special predilection for the physically disgusting is apparent as early as the freshman-hazing scene which opens the action, or at least as early as the moment in that scene when a bullying upperclassman ladles chicken noodle soup onto the shaven head of the hero, leaving scores of wormy little wet noodles clinging all over the fellow's whitish bald plate.

Among the very best WWII movies. The nekkid boobs that the summary refers to is a definite plus.

Another typical dutch movie (ww2, betrayal and sex). Although pretty much dated, the plot-line is interesting, and it's fun to see the 'famous' dutch actors in their younger years. If you like this one, you'll like Max Manus too.
