Totally going against the grain here but I actually found this movie quite enjoyable, even for multiple viewings. Kurt Russell is very good here, much in the same sense Arnold Schwarzenegger is excellent in his Terminator roles. It's got some great scenes ("Affirmative two") and the setting itself is very good. I think that with a higher budget and a director that cared less for flash it could've been much better. Still it's good and Paul W.S. Anderson's best by far.

Why am I supposed to be cheering for Todd here? Boo science, yah brutal indoctrination? I don't get it. In fact none of this makes any sense - a pointless training mission, super soldiers who are useless, a Sergeant with no functional communication skills. You know who would have been good in this movie? Kurt Russell. Too bad they hired some robot instead.

I always watch this movie thinking that it has to be better than I remember it being. But its not. There's really no plot, or ending, and Kurt Russell just isn't tough enough.

Kurt Russell is too good of an actor to be in mindless action like this. You would normally have this much action when the actor can't act. I can't see anything because of the smoke/dust ("atmosphere"), I don't understand the plot (bad guys are bad so let's root for this brutal killer), and I'm not invested in the supporting cast (how did he end up with that woman and the kid again?). Fav scene: when the settlers defend against the initial wave the soundtrack got me going.

Dull and derivative Kurt Russell vehicle is a low rent direct to video action film given a much higher budget than it deserves. It's Universal Soldier (1992) in space, only without a sense of humour. Russell is miscast as a genetically engineered soldier with a stone faced expression. Why such a charismatic actor was offered this robotic role is anyone's guess, but he is a real bore to watch. The sets aren't bad, and Anderson directs with some style, but it can't avoid its redundant fate.

Unfairly maligned film, mostly cuz it's by Anderson. The final fight is smashing.

Guess there's not a lot to hate, but not much to love either. It's a very straigt forward action flick, with very little and very simple character development. They do shoot a kid in the beginning of the movie, and it's with Gary Busey.

Apparently this was forgettable enough that I reviewed Escape From L.A. instead. I only remember that one line, "I'll kill them all." but that was cheesy great. Ranks up there with Matrix-Neo's "Yeah. Sure. I'll go."

Had the potential to be a great sci-fi movie, but it's just too boring and uneventful to really enjoy.

A minimalist sci-fi in Hollywood's big-scale tradition of space operas, in which PWSA uses his power to generate an impressive amount of striking images with vivid camera movements and a impressionist sound design -- every punch sounds like a thunder. A film that is basically its surface -- a quasi-silent soldier fights for a community that fears him. Stupidity comes in beautiful shots, as well as Anderson's affection -- it ends with the soldier holding the kid and showin him their destiny.

Good by Paul WS Anderson standards. Sadly, that equates to a steaming pile of brown stuff by anyone else's. Formulaic, uninteresting and humourless. I wonder if by setting 90% of the movie on a garbage planet they were trying to tell us something.

Honestly, I like this movie, if only for being a clicheed predictable action movie. It was no stretch of acting for Kurt Russell, since he has about five lines in the entire film. It's basically the atmosphere that sells it. You know you're watching a B-movie, and you're not expecting anything amazingly thought-provoking. It's what I call a white-noise movie - something you can watch when you don't really want to pay attention.

Written by David Webb Peoples, best known for Blade Runner and Unforgiven, you'd perhaps expect Soldier to go a bit deeper with the themes and give off more of a profound air... But then again, maybe that requires partnership with the right director; Paul Anderson, of the infamous Resident Evil films, probably wasn't the man for the job. But for all it's cheesy flaws, Soldier is enjoyable, and Gary Busy and Jason Isaac's rivalry is amusing to watch play out.

The lack of dialogue for the hero may have been the writer trying to comment on how soldiers are dehumanised and stripped of their individuality. I like to think it's because the studio rang him up one morning and reminded him the screenplay was supposed to be on their desk that afternoon and he just didn't have time to finish it. At least Kurt Russell is as badass as usual.

I was originally going to give this movie a 60 but then I remembered the kung-fu movie inspired fight at the end of the movie and that bumped it up to a 70. I respect the decision to have a mainly mute Soldier for a lead character. I think it helps convey the message that this guy is a blank-slate but that doesn't mean that it doesn't make the movie more boring overall. I loved the sci-fi elements of this movie. I think they wanted to make Starship Troopers but this is satire with a hammer.

Anderson comes closer than usual to hitting the bullseye in SNAKE PLISSKEN BEYOND THUNDERDOME – benefits from Russell’s commanding, near-wordless performance; while the world he inhabits is familiar, there’s a style and flair to its design and execution that almost raises this to a cut above. Lets itself down with an oddly monotonous and sluggish action finale, which sidelines the two most fun and interesting characters (Issac and Busey), robbing the ultimate finale of a sense of victory.

25th anniversary review of this film which I last watched almost that long ago, so details foggy. I know this is written by the same guy who penned Blade Runner and it shows it's strength by this. Russell is great and I like the sci-fi/action mix.

Simplistic pulp story and script, almost but not quite redeemed by Kurt Russell's rather sensitively done "killing machine learning to feel" performance.

"But one against 17... what are you gonna do..." *Cocks heavy assault riffle* "I'm going to kill them all, sir." --Take one of the cheesy Arnold movies you love, take out the humor and replace it with feels, the hero was taken away as a baby, he never got to see his family etc. I heavily disagree with the past few reviewers. Though the story in itself is simple, it's filled with details and flashbacks, which are done pretty well. It simply relies on you feeling and cheering on the protagonist

After rewatching this, I realise that Paul W.S. Anderson can be a creative and competent director when he gets his act together. It's forgettable, and making as charismatic an actor like Kurt Russell to play an emotionless solider was an ill-advised move, but its solid and dumb sci-fi with a very good and imaginative production design to the interplanetary environments.

In its defense, it's occasionally visually interesting and has a pretty decent cast. That said, it is very nonsensical and pointless; Even at 90 minutes it drags on seemingly forever. The score is so mediocre it hurts, and once it settles as is the film.

I was never planning to watch this but caught the start on TV and the premise managed to hold my attention, for an hour at least, before the predictably disappointing climax. Russell's got presence, despite having about four lines of dialogue in total; some parts of the plot make little sense, but that doesn't matter. The most amazing thing about this film is that it was released in 1998 - I'd never heard of it before and it feels like a Jean-Claude Van Damme job from 10 years earlier.
