Sole Survivor

The gentleman's Final Destination which is me being polite and not stating how boring this is for large chunks, they had to add a strip poker scene to shock us back into the fray. Great concept, some genuine creepadoodle but it just isn't able to maintain it

It has its moments & is an interesting piece of horror history given its many similarities to Final Destination, but it's largely a mess that can't quite figure out what it's trying to be & ends up feeling a bit cluttered because of it. Part slasher & part psychological horror with a splash of quirky romance, it does have some surprisingly effective comedy & decent performances. But, the horror elements leave a lot to be desired & the premise would be done better 17 years later. Still, not bad.

Definitely inspired both Final Destination and It Follows. Yes some of it is a slow burn, yet it works out pretty well and is quite creepy. Sticks the landing.

Imagine if the premise of Final Destination was actually executed well and you've got this movie. There are also strong shades of It Follows. For a film that is so seldom talked about, the clear impact of Sole Survivor on future horror projects is far-reaching. I love that she tells the evil spirits to "just be cool, okay?" I'm going to try that the next time a ghost haunts me
