Reinforces my theory that films about confused people are generally... unsatisfying. As a character piece it gives Cornish some complex material to work with - depicting a teen who is on one hand in the throes of a sexual awakening, and on the other, stuck in very childish ways of thought. All very well, but the writer/director doesn't know where to go with this idea or how to write a structured story with clear motives. It meanders around and flounders in its excessive length. Forgettable.

The naivety of a girl going adult too early is an uneven story, but Abbie.C is awesome and even S.Worthless can't drag her down. The cinematography is also a big plus and I liked the ending. *Preview*: #12#, exp-4*, story, reviews, Abbie.C/9, R5.

I want to be fair with the score because despite this winning lots of awards, despite me being Australian, despite me supporting the Australian film industry and despite me being in full support of films involving complex sexual awakenings where breasts and penises should be shown and embraced for story-telling purposes I found this on the whole to be a very "meh" film. Except for the excellent soundtrack as I'm a Decoder Ring fanboy. Bugger, so much for being fair.

The only film I've ever seen that would have been improved by the introduction of a character who was a serial killer. Obvious, depressing stuff. The cinematographer's color palette (mostly harsh blues and greens) made good-looking, talented actors look ugly.

"An exercise in film-school pretense, Somersault prettifies the ugliness of a girl's sexual experience after she leaves her mother's nest." - Ed Gonzalez

Weak, nothing to draw in the viewer, poor footage that reminds me of a home video.

Featuring solid performances all around, especially from Cornish, it's fine for what it's trying to be and is, despite its stumbles here and there, a perfectly watchable- if also very by-the-book- coming of age story that still largely holds up over a decade later. Powered by its cast and a strong soundtrack that captures its emotional tone quite well, it's worth a look.

This was Cate Shortland's first full-length movie and what a piece of brilliance it was. Really enjoyable to watch in any means. One of the best movies in year 2004.
