Rated low, but highly recommended! Masterful yet humble cinematography, a bold and refreshingly reckless Aaron Copland score, and enthralling turns from Baker (though far too old for her role) and Meeker are all steadily ruined as what begins as unflinching brutality with a refreshing realist view of New York City devolves into gripping yet pulpy melodrama and finally an embarrassing conclusion that's either extremely misogynistic or maybe just contrarian.

Maybe one of the worst endings of all time.

Unexpected film about a topic - a rape victim's PTSD starts to unravel her life - that must've been groundbreaking at the time. The 1st hour's very well made w/ a great lead performance & beautifully composed shots. But it's paced so slowly - the camera follows even her mundane movements - I wouldn't have reached the good part w/out the aid of a FF button. At that point the film becomes a riveting & suspenseful horror film. But PTSD or not, her last decision is so unlikely it ends unsatisfyingly

It should've been subtitled: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Toxic Masculinity. Taking the mood of an Alfred Hitchcock Presents television episode (an everyday person facing a crime), the picture excels when using innovative cinematography, music, and montages. But as the film goes on--for a good half hour too long--it becomes insulting in politics and execution. And that is sad because a crime too taboo for the particular era of Hollywood deserved better. Avoid at all costs.

BlurayRip no MakingOff.

This is quite a film. Director Jack Garfein was a prominent figure at the Actors Studio and conceived this as a vehicle for his wife Baker. It does nothing you really expect a film from this period to do. There's no dialogue for the first 15 minutes. It's depiction of Baker's traumatic response to the attack is amazingly realistic for a time when nothing like it appears on screen. After Meeker arrives mid-film, there's no clear indication where it's going to end up.
