My recollection of Natalie Zemon Davis's little book is that it was notably unsentimental. Here, it becomes a tale expressing the wish that one man's sacrifice could be the mechanism by which a nation torn by war, and that continues to be torn by racism, could heal its wounds and unite. Despite these fantasy elements, it is hard not to feel that the ambiguous heroism of the lead male character was a bit too morally complex for audiences and some critics to accept. Some women may cry.

Ok film I guess but nothing special really. A way to kill time on a plane I guess.

Actually affecting, but it's so earnest that it's easy to make fun of. "I know because I never loved him the way that I love you!"

Enjoyable, good natured film. Too glossy to have any real depth.

Richard gere is a neil breen impostor!

Pretty slow film. The beginning almost bored me into powering it off. The end was dramatic. But it wasn't a charming or witty Richard Gere.
