When the patriarch of the family passes away, the teenage children must take responsibility for the family chores: the preparation of the rituals, the hunting and putting the all-important meat on the table. These newfound responsibilities are even more daunting, however, when you live in the city and happen to be a family of cannibals. (imdb)

It piqued my interest but it failed to follow through on its promise. Garu seems to be too concerned with horror film aesthetics, failing to satisfactorily address the issues the film raises.

The American remake was far superior. (Of course)

Odd mix of modern gory horror and family melodrama. Visuals were of an underwhelming digital style and the soundtrack psycho-esque strings. A muddled attempt at exploring the difficulties and injustices of city life.

I think this gets too much credit just for being horror flick with subtitles. The premise is fresh, but the execution just confused and annoyed me. Watching it I was reminded of Almadovar, but now I am sure it was just because of gays, prostitutes, artistic ambition and Mexican language. I'm curious to see American remake, so far I fail to see reasoning behind it.

"Few things are more irritating than movies that get their jollies off of abusing women, a preference We Are What We Are then emphasizes by showing the dead prostitute's battered face." - Aaron Cutler

A heartwarming tragedy about a cannibalistic family trying to cope with the loss of their whoring father. Uh... Yeah.

One of the fun things about watching movies from unfamiliar countries is trying to guess whether it really is fucking weird or if it's fairly normal by the standards of their movie industry. Anywho, this is a movie about a dysfunctional family of cannibals (and that's not even the reason I call them dysfunctional) trying to get to grasp with life after the death of the family patriarch. Does a wonderful job of highlighting how stupid it is to keep girls from becoming heads of households.

Disturbing story that about a cannibal family in Mexico or something. Really graphic, and physically violent in a lot of ways. Looking forward to catching the remake sometime.
